No, You Don’t Have a First Amendment Right to Disrupt Worship

“Protesters often claim that their actions are protected by the First Amendment. As long as they remain on public sidewalks and do not block access to the church, that may be true. But it is a violation of two separate federal laws to interfere with a worship service itself.”

(Jesse Johnson – The Cripplegate) On Sunday, anti-ICE activists interrupted a worship service at Cities Church in Minneapolis. The activists entered the church chanting and yelling, blocked the aisles, and ultimately forced the apparent abandonment of the worship service.

This is, quite simply, illegal—but many pastors don’t know that. In fact, many law-enforcement officers don’t know that either, and they can be paralyzed by uncertainty. That uncertainty is compounded when the “protesters” claim a First Amendment right to be there.

The truth is, there is no such right. Federal law makes the disruption of a worship service illegal, and many states, cities, and counties have their own laws against it. View article →
