(Protestia) The estimable Phil Johnson, Executive Director of Grace to You, founder and former curator of The Spurgeon Archive, and one of our favorite people ever, has been afflicted with a health scare these past few days after waking up and suffering a pulmonary embolism early Friday morning.
A pulmonary embolism is incredibly serious and develops when a blood clot constricts and stops blood flow to an artery in the lung, resulting in chest pains, shortness of breath, and symptoms like a heart attack. According to the National Library of Medicine:
If untreated, acute PE is associated with a significant mortality rate (as high as 30%), whereas the death rate of diagnosed and treated PE is 8%. Up to 10% of acute PE patients die suddenly. Two of three patients succumbing to PE die within 2 h after presentation.
