“Even as the four Pray’s Mill elders involved in the scandal resigned, the question remains, “What happened?” These same men compiled a dossier detailing what they believed to be every misstep of Tom Buck’s preaching, but does anyone know all of the details regarding their failures, forcing their resignation? Furthermore, does anyone know why they did this?”
(Virgil Walker) No one wakes up with the plan to destroy everything they’ve built. Everything they’ve built is destroyed because, somewhere along the way, a terrible idea started making sense.
That is the stupidity of sin.
Sin has the extraordinary ability to make one foolish and blind. The problem further downstream is that by the time we indulge the behavior, it’s too late. The damage is done.
Esau didn’t see it. Genesis 25:29-34 captures it.
“Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.”
The Hebrew word translated as “despised” is the verb bāzâ, and it means to despise, disdain, or hold in contempt. More importantly, it means to regard as insignificant or treat as worthless.
