“Alcoholics Anonymous is successful. But its success is not in treatment effectiveness, which is limited, but in pointing people away from Jesus Christ, and in watering down the theology of the Christians who do attend.”
(John Lanagan – The Word Like Fire) What does the Bible say about Christians who participate in 12 Step groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous? Is this allowed or is it biblically forbidden?
It is forbidden. In spiritual matters we are to remain separate. According to 2 Corinthians 6:14-15:
Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; … “THEREFORE, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” says the Lord. (2 Cor 6:14-15)
