“We’ve all seen the tearful pastor standing before his congregation, claiming he’s been led astray. Whether he’s admitting to an affair, gambling, or misusing church money, the appeal to forgiveness can help him get a second chance, sometimes even a third. That’s where blind loyalty gets in the way of common sense.”
(Revolver) Somewhere along the way, going to church started looking like joining a lifestyle brand or a weird cult. These days the Millennial pastor at your neighborhood Evangelical megachurch has “girl dad” vibes. He’s trying to look manly in his Buck Mason head-to-toe outfit, but he’s still giving effeminate vibes. And his wife, the real pants-wearer in the family, could run for the mayor of Zara, with her casual corporate “girl boss” look. The inside of the church has better lighting than your average cozy living room, and you half-expect someone to hand you an app code on the way out.
Now, the old cool pastor back in the day would’ve been happy with a guitar and a congregation that admired him for preaching in flip-flops. Those were the casual “boomer” church days. But many of the 80s megachurches usually had some sleazy guy in a polyester suit leading the flock.
CRN has compiled a list of false teachers and several other professing Christians we’ve warned you about over the years. The list also contains those we must keep an eye on plus movements, organizations and “frauds, phonies and money-grubbing religious quacks” to mark and avoid as per Romans 16:17-18
