3 For by the grace having been given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. Romans 12:3 translated from the NA28 Greek text)
Not long ago a good friend showed me this verse and said a fellow brother at our church seemed very confused about the words “measure of faith.” Part of his confusion stemmed from reading several commentaries about it that differed from each other….
I was not prepared to answer my friend at that moment because I was finishing up a Bible study and had to help with other duties. All I could do was look up the words in that passage in my Greek New Testament and then look up the meaning of the words in the context of the verb tenses, etc. Later I did look at some other commentaries about this passage and, honestly, I cannot understand why anyone would be confused about it. Let’s look at it.
To understand any passage like this in the Word of God we must start by keeping it in context. Here is Romans 12 from the LSB.
