“In recent American history, many have seen Jesus as fire insurance. Praying a prayer to believe in Him means that you’re not going to go to hell. However, people who go down this path, flippantly believing in Jesus, are often unconverted because they don’t understand His true teaching.”
(Seth Brickley – TruthScript) The self-deceived, while claiming to follow Jesus, do not possess the marks of a true Christian. The letter of 1 John was given by the Lord as a helpful guide that one “may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). Genuine believers possess sound doctrine, including an accurate understanding of the gospel (1 John 2:23)….
They also hate their sin and pursue righteousness (1 John 3:7-9). Furthermore, they have a special love for God’s people (1 John 3:14-16). But the only mark false Christians achieve is that, many times, they pass the doctrinal test but do not pass the all-important exam of a gospel-transformed life. They do not hate their sin, they do not truly practice righteousness, and they do not have a special love for the body of Christ.
