We are born from our mothers’ wombs depraved and separated from God because we are sinners. Unless God intervenes in our lives we will be self-absorbed and temporally focused in every part of our lives. We are “depraved” because we desperately seek fulfillment from our only avenue open to us for any circumstance which will tell us we are special or deserving of a positive “feeling” of contentment or fulfillment…. A simple definition of mercy is “the withholding of deserved punishment and relieving distress.” The Greek ἔλεος (eleos) speaks of “compassion, pity.” One Greek lexicon tells us, “Kindness or good will towards the miserable and afflicted joined with a desire to relieve them.” Even the pagans of Greece felt pity. Doctrine is a vital part of the true Church. Back in 2004 God took me through a yearlong renewal/revival with Him. By the end of that I found that I no longer cared anything about becoming “seen” or “known” through “religiosity.” No, all I cared about was being where God wanted me to be, doing what He wanted me to be doing. There is a certain hysteria currently amongst many of our 21st Century Puritans. While I gladly count myself as a Puritan, I also know that our enemy desires to shackle and nullify our witness and divert our focus, by feeding our heightened perceptions as to what is godly and what is false with misleading and derogatory information that cause us to turn on one another. Over the past several days I have been under a great deal of time pressure in the morning so that my usual time I spend with the Lord in my daily devotions has been very hurried sometimes, while at others I have been so rushed I have had to neglect it altogether. The worst part of that, of course, is the time I spend in prayer. This morning was different though. I was able to quietly get into my usual place with no one else around and get into my devotionals, my Bible, and my prayer journal. And, what happened? I opened my Morning by Morning devotional from Spurgeon to January 8th and it was like God was speaking directly to me about my resentments and anger about my daily quiet time being treated as if it meant nothing…. I am posting this today because my brother-in-law who came to stay with us just after Thanksgiving this year so he could be close to the hospital in Oklahoma City he needed for treatment of a cancer issue had, died on December 27th. My wife and I attended his funeral today. They had the “viewing” at the funeral home yesterday. I witnessed a great deal of weeping from his siblings and his children and grandchildren. My wife loved him and wept a great deal after he died and didn’t hold back during that time in the funeral home nor at the funeral service nor at the burial at the cemetery. The key to understanding the passage above is in getting who the “us” is that Paul mentions repeatedly all through it. Whoever they are, they are indeed blessed. Just because someone claims to be a Christian does not mean that person is regenerate, justified, sanctified, or adopted into God’s family. Many base their standing as a Christian on religious acts they have done. Others claim salvation based upon their good words plus their religion. Tragically, there are also many, and more each day it seems, “Christian leaders” who preach and teach things that they portray as the Good News, but are, instead, only the result of marketing techniques. Human faith is not the same thing as Genuine (saving) faith. The former is based in Human reason and intellect. The latter is supernatural. What passes for faith in many professing believer’s “Christianity” is a belief based in who preaches to or teaches them…. Continue reading →

Deception is our enemy’s most powerful weapon. When a person is deceived into believing a lie they are not intending to participate in something that is wrong. No, they believe they have the truth and all those who oppose what they believe are just wrong. When the lie leads people to believe that their form of ‘religion’ is true Christianity, regardless of how unbiblical it is, they are not actually intending to be evil following an evil system. They are ‘sure’ they have the truth. They are sincere. I am sure the priests of Baal whom Elijah defeated at Mount Carmel were sincere as well. Continue reading →
