The Doctrine of Justification by Faith alone, or sola fide, was the key of the Protestant Reformation. Its recovery was from the darkness created by the dominance of man-made religiosity, which held that justification was accomplished through faith plus good works. This grew into people being required to do religious acts in order to be considered righteous. The driving force of the Reformation was captured by the Latin phrase Post tenbras lux (After darkness, light).

One constant rejoinder I receive is, ‘Well her children are grown now, she has time and energy to serve the Lord in other ways!’

The natural mind, plagued with selective rationalization, demands that God be fair in His dealings with all humankind. Fairness speaks of justice. One of the tenets of our republican form government in the USA is a right to a fair and speedy trial before one’s peers. A person on trial for a crime may or may not truly want justice. They may be guilty so their desire is not justice, but grace. If a judge in a criminal trial declares a defendant guilty but then defers sentencing in lieu of probation or “time served” then he has extended grace to the guilty party. Continue reading

Wright shared more about his long-standing position on the early chapters of Genesis, offering that not only is it poetry that is not to be taken literally, but that “Adam” and “Eve” were simply a primal pair of hominids (a type of primates that first appeared 5-7 million years ago) living among other hominids when “some strange force or power” called to be a part of “the human” project.
We recently wrote about Wright after he suggested abortion may be a tragic yet best allowable option in cases of rape, incest, or for the mental health of the mother who can’t deal with a child with physical and mental deformities, and after he offered that belief in the bodily resurrection of Christ is not necessary to be a Christian. (Wes Bredenhof) Many Reformed people object to the idea of God as our friend, or at least are uncomfortable with it. Since he is God incarnate, the same reasoning is applied to Jesus Christ. I imagine they’re reacting to that type of American evangelicalism which portrays our relationship with God in terms too casual. Speaking of him as our friend seems to endanger a proper understanding of God’s majesty and holiness — that applies to all three persons of the Trinity. Continue reading
