Dignity, Faith, & Work

Charles Dickens began A Tale of Two Cities with the immortal lines: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” These words sound like a contradiction, dissonant to the ear, harsh to the brain. How could the times be both best and worst?

Before Charles Dickens ever picked up a pen, the French mathematician, philosopher, and writer Blaise Pascal had made use of the paradox. For Pascal, man himself is the crowning paradox of all creation. He said that we are at the same time the creatures of highest grandeur and lowest misery. The paradox is that we can think, an ability which is a two-edged sword. That we can contemplate ourselves is our grandeur…. Continue reading

Choose This Day: You Can Have the World, or You Can Have Christ, But You Can’t Have Both

“In their efforts to avoid conflict or controversy, [pastors] often shy away from addressing topics that might clash with the dominant cultural worldview. This stems from a variety of motives, including a desire to maintain a semblance of peace, attract a larger following, or simply to avoid the responsibility that comes with guiding a congregation through the complexities of modern societal issues.”

(The Dissenter) “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” — Joshua 24:14-15

Southern Baptist plagiarism questions resurface after Harvard president resignation

(Ben Zeisloft – The Sentinel) Former Southern Baptist Convention President Ed Litton retains his role as a trustee at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary despite documented instances of plagiarism in his sermons, a reality which resurfaces in the wake of Harvard University President Claudine Gay resigning because of unearthed instances of plagiarism in her academic work.

Conservative activists and reporters documented several dozen examples of plagiarism in roughly half of the academic papers published by Gay which, combined with backlash over a recent hearing about campus antisemitism, led to her resignation on Tuesday…. Continue reading

California’s Goal: Trans Every Child

“As repeatedly demonstrated by now, those who are heavily immersed in this belief system have become some of the biggest bullies, who seem to go out of their way to make the lives of anyone who questions their identity as miserable as possible. They cannot cope with facts about biological sex, and their initial reaction to pushback on their state of delusion is to scream and yell.”

(Samantha Koch – The Patriot Post) If your child isn’t struggling with her gender identity, or questioning his sexuality, or hasn’t been introduced to the confusing and mind-bending concepts of gender ideology — don’t worry. California is determined to tell every single one of the nearly 10 million kids living there that they can pick their pronouns and gender…. Continue reading

Disney Can’t Stop Poking the Corpse of ‘Star Wars’

“Star Wars fans are not sexist, racist, or whatever- phobic. They just love their franchise. They want good stories and characters about which they can care. They recognize when someone is trying to wreck it for no other reason than to score some woke points. Or phone it in for the money.”

(Lincoln Brown – PJ Media) “In my day,” he said, leaning back in his rocking chair and taking up his whittling, “we didn’t have no ‘Episode IV: A New Hope.’ We had ‘Star Wars.’ And we were grateful to have it.”

Preston Sprinkle Hosts Webinar on Why We Need More Homosexual and Queer ‘Christian Leaders’

“Before you jump to conclusions and try to argue that he’s simply trying to promote a biblical sexual ethic among people who “struggle” with this temptation, let’s…pause for a moment and apply that logic to other situations. What if we promote [sinners like] pedophiles, or thieves, or the greedy, or people who can’t mortify any other sin into church leadership? Would we say we needed more drunkards in church leadership?”

(The Dissenter) Preston Sprinkle, one of the original advisory board members of Revoice, the “gay Christian” movement within Evangelical churches, has been instrumental in shifting the church’s doctrinal stance on homosexuality and other aberrant sexualities…. Continue reading

A Culture of Unholy Christians

By Marsha West

I’m addressing a subject about which I have already written a decade ago entitled A Culture of Counterfeit Christians (from herein out CCC). The article begins…

Have you ever run over a dead skunk in the road?  I have, during a heat wave.  The smell got into my tires and permeated our garage for days!  I’ll go out on a limb and say that no one takes pleasure in the highly offensive smell of skunk spray, dead or alive.

My point in bringing this up is that to God the stench of sin is far worse than skunk spray.  For an example of just how much the Lord hates sin, grab a cup of coffee and read First and Second Kings.  But given our penchant for wanting everything now, here’s a snippet from 1 Kings 16 to illustrate how God dealt with one of Israel’s most ruthless kings:

Since I exalted you out of the dust and made you leader over my people Israel, and you have walked in the way of Jeroboam and have made my people Israel to sin, provoking me to anger with their sins, behold, I will utterly sweep away Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. Anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the field the birds of the heavens shall eat.  (1 Kings 16:1-4)

God had already destroyed Jeroboam for his flagrant sins, yet Baasha repeated the same mistakes.  God rebuked the Israelites for their sinful ways and vowed to punish them.  He did not take sin lightly! And yet we twenty-first century Christians are repeating the same sins the pagans committed when Baasha was king.

CCC was updated in 2017. Six years later I’ve decided to do one last update, this time to take a deeper dive into the sin problem in Christendom. I’ll begin with a few questions for readers to mull over: #1 Is it God’s desire for believers to have a biblical foundation? #2 Is it God’s desire for believers to exhibit Christlike behavior? #3 If a professing Christian were to wallow in a mud hole and eat slop with pigs, would God sluff it off and muse “That’s my boy,” or would He get angry?

Admittedly, new converts need to grow in their faith. Newbies need to understand what they believe and why they believe it. Becoming a mature believer is a process. The biblical term is sanctification. God uses this process to make believers holy. The Lord Jesus spoke about this in John 17:17 when he said, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” The Lord was talking about separating believers unto God. Most believers don’t become holy overnight. Through reading and studying God’s Word, they’ll grow in their faith and receive divine guidance on how followers of Jesus Christ are to live their lives. The Christian’s primary goal is to become Christlike. Believers who spend time in the Bible will grow in their faith; likewise, they’ll gain knowledge and wisdom (or spiritual discernment which is the ability to recognize truth from error). Got Questions reminds: “Satan has ‘blinded the minds of unbelievers’ (2 Corinthians 4:4), so God must shed light on the human mind to enable us to understand truth. It is impossible to attain wisdom without God. He gives discernment or takes it away (Job 12:19-21).”

The Holy Spirit sanctifies every born again Christian. Anyone who professes a belief in the Lord Jesus but makes a conscious choice to ignore His commands that are expressly laid out in the Bible and stubbornly clings to the sinful ways of the world, might be a false convert.

So, how do we go about evaluating whether someone who claims to be a Christian is truly born again? Think of that individual as a fruit bearing tree. Eventually that tree should bring forth nourishing edible fruit. However, when trees bear no fruit, experienced inspectors who evaluate fruit must check to see what went wrong. Often the thing that becomes apparent is that a tree hasn’t produced fruit because there’s no root system to absorb water and nutrients. If that’s the problem, the tree is dead. It is impossible for a dead tree to sink its roots into the soil where water and nutrients are found.  The fact of the matter is that a dead tree cannot produce nourishing edible fruit.

Born again believers are called to become like Christ.  “The reign of King Jesus over my heart attitudes expels wrong attitudes,” says Gary Yagel. “Paul explains this part of the Christ-follower’s mission when he said to the church at Ephesus, “You’ve been taught to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Emphasis Yagel’s)

When I wrote CCC a decade ago, my main concern was believers’ fondness for involving themselves in occult practices forbidden by God. Anyone who knowingly disobeys God’s command to “be holy, for I am holy” is sinning. God views sin as a wicked evil act. Those who read/study the Bible will come to understand that God is holy. In fact, the Bible says He is “Holy, holy, holy…” Once the reality of His incomparable holiness sinks in, Christians will realize that all sin is first and foremost against the God they claim to love. “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight…” (Psalm 51:4). When believers recognize that God sees sin as evil, their desire will be to put away all sin and honor their Lord and Master. “Woe is me!” cried Isaiah. “For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” (Isaiah 6:5). (The holiness of God is covered in CCC under the heading Holy Smokes! So, I won’t restate it here.)

Returning to CCC:

One of my favorite pastimes is discussing (debating, dissecting) the Bible with brothers and sisters in Christ.  So, it troubles me when I strike up a conversation with a long time believer who knows very little about the Bible. To have a close relationship with a person we must get to know them.  The obvious course of action is to ask probing questions.  We’ve got to dig below the surface to uncover the intimate details of his/her life.  If we’re not interested in a meaningful relationship, we won’t probe!

Those who sincerely wish to be in relationship with the Father must dig deep into the scriptures, because that’s the one and only place to learn about God and His ways. “What we believe about God,” said A. W. Tozier, “is the most important thing about us.”

What I was hoping readers would come to grips with is that God’s people are not to tolerate sin in their lives, they are to mortify whatever sins they’re committing.  Unfortunately, we often discover some number of years after a so-called conversion experience that many who label themselves Evangelicals participate in the worst sort of sins imaginable. In CCC I wrote,

…many professing Christians ignore the fact that one of the gravest sins we commit is sexual sin.  Having sexual relations outside of marriage (the biblical understanding of marriage is the union of a man and woman) goes against the clear teaching of Scripture.

To enlighten evangelicals who lacked a clear understanding of the religion they identified with, I included a quote from C. S. Lewis where he directs our attention to the fact that people make decisions based on a set of principles:

Our warped natures, the devils who tempt us, and all the contemporary propaganda for lust, combine to make us feel that the desires we are resisting are so ‘natural,’ so ‘healthy,’ and so reasonable, that it is almost perverse and abnormal to resist them. Poster after poster, film after film, novel after novel, associate the idea of sexual indulgence with the ideas of health, normality, youth, frankness, and good humour. Now this association is a lie. Like all powerful lies, it is based on a truth …that sex in itself (apart from the excesses and obsessions that have grown round it) is ‘normal’ and ‘healthy,’ and all the rest of it. The lie consists in the suggestion that any sexual act to which you are tempted at the moment is also healthy and normal.  Now this, on any conceivable view, and quite apart from Christianity, leads to impotence, disease, jealousies, lies, concealment, and everything that is the reverse of health, good humour, and frankness. For any happiness, even in this world, quite a lot of restraint is going to be necessary; so the claim made by every desire, when it is strong, to be healthy and reasonable, counts for nothing. Every sane and civilized man must have some set of principles by which he chooses to reject some of his desires and to permit others. One man does this on Christian principles, another on hygienic principles, another on sociological principles. The real conflict is not between Christianity and ‘nature,’ but between Christian principles and other principles in the control of ‘nature,’ for ‘nature’ (in the sense of natural desire) will have to be controlled anyway, unless you are going to ruin your whole life. (Excerpt from Mere Christianity, Book III, Chapter 5)

Sadly, many self-professed believers could care less if their life choices honor God. Their focus is entirely on what they feel God wants for them which, for a growing number, is to be healthy, prosperous and happy – having whatever pleasures them is their main goal in life. These people aren’t Spirit controlled; they’re lust controlled. I could go on, but let’s cut to the chase. The “Christians” I just described are false converts. They are ships without a rudder to guide the way, drowning in a sea of worthless idols. They may have a form of religion, however the religion they identify with is not authentic Christianity — and there’s no desire to identify with historic, orthodox biblical Christianity. Why? Because their hearts are darkened. Man-made, man-centered religion is counterfeit! A witch’s brew conjured up in man’s fertile imagination.

Moving along…

After quoting Lewis, I presented the following scriptures:

Our Lord spoke plainly when He said, “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.”  John 12:26   And, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15  Jesus wasn’t just addressing the apostles; what He stated was meant for all those who have placed their faith in Him!

Jesus also gave this warning: I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit (John 15:1-2).

For clarification, Jesus Christ is the vine and the fruitful branches are the Christians who, through a personal relationship with Him, will bear much fruit.  The unfruitful branches are the people who make a superficial commitment and bear little or no fruit.

The Father prunes the vine and discards fruitless branches. Those who professes Christ and behave like heathens may find themselves lopped off the vine – and not because God is mean and intolerant.  On the contrary.   God is long suffering, not willing that any should perish.

I’ll leave you with a warning from R.C. Sproul’s The Holiness of God that held up a mirror to this unrepentant sinner. The Holy Spirit used Dr. Sproul’s book to reveal the odiousness of my sins, sins against a holy God and the necessity for repentance.

Sin is cosmic treason. Sin is treason against a pure Sovereign. It is an act of supreme ingratitude toward the One to whom we owe everything, to the One who has given us life itself.

Let those words sink in.

Hope and Despair

4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through the perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4 (LSB)

The role of a Christian writer primarily focusing on the growing apostasy in the church is a tough one. As the Lord shows us what is really going on in the “visible church” that is Christian in name only it is easy to become overwhelmed. If we focus on the these things to the exclusion of our devotion to our Lord we will find in short order that these battles take a heavy toll…. Continue reading

The Utter Insanity of Joe Biden’s Open Border

“Illegal immigration is insidiously diminishing citizenship by equating illegal aliens with, if not making them preferable to, American citizens. Is there anything an illegal alien cannot do in Biden’s America—work in a campaign, vote in some elections, serve in the military, receive government subsidies? Crisscross international borders without a passport?…To put it another way, why did we expel 8,400 US military personnel for the “crime” of passing on the required but experimental mRNA vaccinations (most of the discharged had natural immunity from prior COVID infections), while we let in millions of foreigners without worrying whether any have been vaccinated for anything, much less have had COVID tests?”

(Victor Davis Hanson – American Greatness) Where have been more than 8 million illegal entries into the United States since Joe Biden was elected president. He appointed Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security, whose apparent prime directive was to destroy the southern border. Continue reading

Hundreds of veterans sign ‘an open letter to the American people’ on Pentagon lawlessness

The letter informed the public that the signatories had “exhausted all internal efforts to rectify recent criminal activity” in the military as top brass abused their power.

(Ben Zeisloft – The Sentinel) Hundreds of military veterans and currently active service members signed “an open letter to the American people” detailing lawlessness among military leadership over the past few years and vowing to hold those responsible accountable under the law.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin mandated two years ago that all service members under Pentagon authority receive COVID vaccinations, an order which was reversed last year only after thousands were forced out of their positions and denied their constitutional right to apply for religious accommodations…. The Pathocrats Transforming the United States

“They demanded lockdowns, platformed and smeared doctors, epidemiologists, and other scientists who dissented from various dogmas, from the pandemic’s probable origin in a Wuhan lab. They’ve engaged in lawfare.”

(Mary Dowling) “For the last seven years, media and governing elites said they were protecting democracy, but they weren’t. They were undermining it. Events of the last year reveal that elites had near-total control over the media. Since losing control, they have started persecuting their enemies,” Michael Shellenberger wrote on X. Socializing with Gavin

“The state doesn’t have the money. So, taxes will have to rise to record levels, working people and the affluent paying even more to Caesar. Is this fair? Of course not. Hundreds of thousands of additional foreign nationals, many illegal border crossers, will flock to California for free health care while U.S. citizens pay their tab.”

The Mark of a Genuine Christian

1 Therefore, laying aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have TASTED THE KINDNESS OF THE LORD. 1 Peter 2:1-3 (LSB)

When the Manhattan Declaration controversy came about back in 2010, it was truly amazing how God used that to clarify the dividing line between true Christianity born from above and that which is a manmade facsimile, which is, of course, not genuine. That dividing line was very precise…. Continue reading

Discerning Glenn Beck’s Influence: The Infiltration of Mormonism in Political Discourse

“Mormonism and Christianity might share some superficial similarities in language and values, the theological chasms between them are vast and unbridgeable and Mormonism is a damnable heresy.”

(The Dissenter) In the current landscape of American political and religious discourse, Mormonism, known officially as the Latter Day Saints, has gained a prominent place, thanks in part to influential talk show host, Glenn Beck. Beck, with his conservative political stance, often weaves his Mormon beliefs into his commentary, presenting a fusion that requires discernment from the Christian audience…. Continue reading

J6 political target drops bombshell whistleblower document that changes everything…

If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me

11 It is a trustworthy saying: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him; 12 If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we will deny Him, He also will deny us; 13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. 2 Timothy 2:11-13 (LSB)

God’s ways are amazing to me. If you go back to the earliest posts on this blog you will find a group of people commenting at that time in very fundamentally sound and edifying ways. It was a very spiritually exciting time for me. When the enemy would attack, everyone would come to the battle armored up and things got interesting. However, through many of those “encounters” it became apparent that God was doing something through them…. Continue reading

Has Hitler Won On The Left?

(Carl R. Trueman – First Things) When is a crime victimless? When its perpetrators enjoy the status of victims, at least according to the nihilistic tastes of the West in our day. That is the lesson of reactions to various events in recent years, from the looting that accompanied many of the “mostly peaceful” BLM protests of 2020 to the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 this year. The response to the violence in Gaza was especially chilling. While there is always room for debating whether a response is proportionate to the act of aggression, the jubilation and exhilaration expressed by American academics, students, and some politicians over the Hamas attacks started before the Israeli counter-attack. The primary cause of spiritual blindness

7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. 8 And then that lawless one will be revealed—whom the Lord Jesus WILL SLAY WITH THE BREATH OF HIS MOUTH and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming— 9 whose coming is in accord with the working of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, 10 and with all the deception of unrighteousness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12 (LSB) Read verses 11-12 on the site.

God’s truth, which is the truth and there is no other, is true regardless of whether people believe it or not. I pray for wisdom and discernment every morning before I start my day. Our Razor’s Edge

Hitler Wasn’t Available: New York Times Runs Article by Hamas Official

“Ninety years ago, on July 9, 1933, just over five months after Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany and years after his virulent anti-Semitism and propensity for violence had become internationally known, the Times published a fawning puff piece on the Führer.”

(Robert Spencer – PJ Media) The New York Times wants you to weep for the people of Gaza, and for what Hamas’ massacre of 1,200 Israelis on Oct. 7, which Gazans cheered in large numbers, has brought upon them. In service of that goal, on Christmas Eve the Paper of Record ran a weepy piece by a prominent Gazan, someone who has witnessed the Israeli incursion firsthand. Did the Times give this plumb editorial space to a “moderate” Gazan, a known foe of the Hamas regime, one of those “innocent Palestinians” who have nothing, nothing whatsoever, to do with Hamas? Uh, not quite. Continue reading
