Francis Chan’s not afraid of the big bad wolf, says “I still love Mike Bickle!”

From Berean Research:

In a piece I wrote entitled The Prosperity Preacher and the Pied Piper of IHOP I warned the Body of Christ that it had become evident that popular preacher Francis Chan had started moving away from Christian orthodoxy and offered proof of this. One thing I found problematic was that Chan chose to unite with and sing praises to IHOP Kansas City’s Pied Piper, Mike Bickle. Bickle is not only a false teacher, some people say he’s a cult leader. It’s common knowledge that several years ago Mike Bickle was in cahoots with a heretical group known as the Kansas City Prophets. According to the late Ken Silva, the KCP “brought grandiose claims that a ‘new breed’ of super prophets were beginning to arrive on planet earth who would change the world forever. These so-called prophets were a group of men that coalesced around a church known as the Kansas City Fellowship, pastored by Mike Bickle, that attracted a following of other likeminded churches in that region.”

“Together 2016”: Denominations link arms with Chrislebrities to erase doctrinal divisions

Berean Research reports on yet another attempt to unite denominations:

Wolf in sheep's clothing

Doctrinal distinctives? Divisions? Not any more. Several major denominations will be blended up smoother than a Vitamix cocktail in a few weeks.

This summer, a “Next Great Awakening” is bringing Assemblies of God Supt. George O. Wood and Southern Baptist Convention president Ronnie Floyd together to link arms in spiritual unity with the Pentecostal Charismatic Churches of North America, Grace Communion International (formerly the Armstrongism Worldwide Church of God), and a host of familiar Chrislebrities including Hillsong United, Francis Chan, Hillsong’s pastorix Christine Caine, Ravi Zacharias, Kari Jobe, Josh McDowell, Lois Palau and others. The number organizers have in mind: One Million.

Christian Post Finds Christian Themes in Vulgar Blockbuster, DeadPool

JD Hall of Pulpit & Pen lays into Christian Post, a so-called Christian site that has the spiritual discernment of a box of rocks. Unfortunately many Christians visit CP to get the latest news and views. Hall writes:

You might have heard of the blockbuster Marvel movie that is now in theaters, Deadpool. Unlike most Marvel movies based upon comic book characters, this film received an ‘R’ rating for its sexual content, on-screen nudity, and vulgarity. Should it surprise you that Christians with a culture-redemption complex are now finding “Christian themes” laced among the coarse jesting, debauchery and displays of fornication?

According to Plugged-In, Deadpool contains 75 f-words, 40 s-words and a whole bunch of others that would probably make your grandma blush and Jesus angry. In fact, Jesus’ name is take in vain numerous times. The movie is laced with beer (both at bars and strip clubs) and drugs, including references to cocaine. The chief protagonist is seen in sexual activity with a female co-star repeatedly, who happens to portray a stripper and prostitute. There’s full frontal nudity, as well as bare breasts, and the lead character’s backside is shown, as well as another guy’s. There’s talk of masturbation, sex toys, porn and oral sex. A stuffed animal is abused, for crying out loud.

False prophets and their destructive heresies

1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. (2 Peter 2:1 NASB)

False professors and false prophets have one thing in common. They are convinced that the ‘religious paradigm’ they love, cherish, follow, and proclaim is true. Of course, they come to this conclusion through what some of them refer to as their ‘thinkology.’ In other words, what makes it true in their hearts is their own acceptance of it. The deciding or defining standard, which is used by these people, is their own value system. They oppose clear Biblical truth because “they just don’t believe it” while they embrace humanistic forms of Christianity simply because their ‘thinkology’ gives them a green light. View article →

Azusa redux: Lou Engle, Greg Laurie uniting denominations?

From Berean Examiner:

“Can you believe with us that denominations will unite, that the races could come together, that God could make us one, as the antidote to the terrific division in our day? Could you believe with us for stadium Christianity where signs and wonders are breaking out and mass evangelism explodes across our country- the Third Great Awakening?”

So asks NAR-affiliated false teacher Lou Engle, founder of the “Azusa Now: The Call” set for April 9th at the LA Coliseum. “We are believing for an outbreak of God’s glory that will touch the Lord on this day! If we move together, we can see a shift in the body of Christ, unto a day of greater healings and a great awakening for America!”

When Azusa Now calls all denominations, it includes the Church of Rome:

Newsweek calls those who believe in divine creation “evangelical extremists”

Noah's ArkIn today’s The Briefing Albert Mohler discussed an article that appeared in Newsweek entitled “Noah’s Ark Rises In Kentucky, Dinosaurs And All” that has to do with the Ark Encounter, the replica of Noah’s Ark being built by the ministry Answers in Genesis. According to Mohler, “The article itself is an attack on the ministry and an attack on the project, but what’s really, really interesting is the subhead in the article, because it speaks of evangelical Christians who deny the theory of evolution and believe in divine creation as,

“evangelical extremists.”

Lindsay Tucker’s piece, says Mohler, “is really not all that important, but the headline is. It tells us that, according to the liberal secular elites in this country, if you believe in the biblical account of creation, you are an evangelical extremist. The dominant secular academy so committed to the worldview of Darwinism and evolution finds it inconceivable that a large sector of Americans still refuse to accept evolution and still believe in the biblical account of creation. So what exactly do they think of us? As being eccentric, or odd, or confessional, convictional? No, as this headline makes very clear, they consider us “evangelical extremists.” Who knew that merely believing in the total truthfulness and the historicity of the book of Genesis would earn us the label “evangelical extremists” in Newsweek magazine, but there it is in plain print.”

The costliness of a Biblical view of sin

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (John 1:1-5 NASB)

Those who have a problem with the Doctrine of Original Sin and the Wrath of God against all sin attempt to paint the God of Reformation Theology as some sort of ogre full of anger with very little love manifest except in the case of a chosen few. In their examples of how God operates in saving people, sin is never the issue. They portray God as loving everyone to the maximum and even if their sin amounted to open rebellion against Him on their part. In their theology He just looks the other way and attempts to save everyone, but the point of contention is that the God in their example is unable to save anyone. The salvation of people is only made a possibility with those actually being saved being those who hear the Gospel and respond by exercising their “sovereign free will.” On the other hand, the God of the Bible is not anything like this. He is Sovereign. He saves those whom He has elected or chosen unto eternal life. No one limits Him in any way. Man’s will is in no way a barrier to God fulfilling His will. From these two vastly different understandings of theology comes to very different understandings of sin.  Let’s look at a biblical view of sin and I invite you to compare your own understanding of it to what we unpack here. If your’s is different, I suggest to you that the Bible is not in error…  View article →

New book: Homosexuals & everyone else need Gospel

The book was penned by Denny Burk and Heath Lambert of Boyce College. Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote the forward. Baptist Press has the story:

The Gospel demands change for homosexuals just as it demands change for all people, two Baptist collegiate professors write in a new book, “Transforming Homosexuality: What the Bible Says About Sexual Orientation and Change.”

“If we withhold that truth from them out of fear of offending them, then we don’t love them. We cut them off from salvation,” Denny Burk and Heath Lambert write. “The only way for them to be saved is to receive Christ. The only way to receive Christ is by repentance and faith.”

Burk and Lambert are faculty members at Boyce College, the undergraduate school of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

Burk, professor of biblical studies, and Lambert, visiting professor of biblical counseling who also is executive director of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, acknowledge that homosexuality can be an uncomfortable subject to talk about amid the championing of the Bible’s clear standards for sexuality.

Grieving the Holy Spirit

8 For He said, “Surely, they are My people, Sons who will not deal falsely.” So He became their Savior. 9 In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the angel of His presence saved them; In His love and in His mercy He redeemed them, And He lifted them and carried them all the days of old. 10 But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them. (Isaiah 63:8-10 NASB)

What is this biblical teaching on grieving the Holy Spirit? What is the context? The immediate context is found in Ephesians 4:17-32 within the larger context of a unified Body of Christ and how Christians are to live and interact within that. This begins at Ephesians 4:1 and runs through 6:20. For this post, we will focus on 4:17-32. View article →

Looking at HGTV’s Fixer Upper Joanna Gaines’ testimony: Christianity, or Prosperity Gospel?

From Berean Research:

Elizabeth Prata of The End Time is to be commended for tackling such a controversial topic as this one will surely be. Full disclosure: My husband and I are fans of Fixer Upper and regularly watch the show. So when I came across Elizabeth’s blog post, my first thought was, “Uh-oh.” Nevertheless, I felt I should read her report because Chip and Joanna are professing Christians. (They must be for real because this season high-profile author and pastor Max Lucado appeared briefly on the show.) So I dived into the first installment and learned all sorts of things about the Gaines family I wouldn’t otherwise know. Part 1 of Elizabeth’s reporting is “fair & balanced.”

Steven Furtick: His Past, Present, Future

Vince and Lori Williams of Falsified Ministries have written an informative piece on megachurch “prophet-pastor” Steven Furtick. For those who are unfamiliar with Furtick–you need to be–he’s the wolf that’s leading the sheep astray from the pulpit/stage of Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC.

While most leaders within the seeker-driven movement will go out of their way to pride themselves on the rapid growth of their own congregation and campuses, Steven Furtick is near the top, if not #1. Furtick is one of the most arrogant, ego-driven, narcissistic leaders we have yet to see, with no signs of changing. He has become, and is rapidly progressing, into one of the world’s most popular leaders in the seeker-driven movement. Currently in his early 30’s, Furtick is already a rising star in evangelical circles around the world. He is the pastor of Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina – a Southern Baptist multi-site church. He is the author of two best-selling books on the New York Times list. He received a B.A. in Communication from North Greenville University and a Masters of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Although young, Furtick has learned the tools of the seeker-driven trade, and learned them quickly. He infiltrated the evangelical world in 2005 supported by some of the top seeker-driven leaders, and now going at full speed he’s not showing any signs of stopping.

If you are a Furtick follower, or if you are one who has been able to see past the surface to realize there’s something seriously wrong, you will find this very informative, or at least very interesting.

American Girls: How social media is disturbing the lives of teenagers

This piece was written by Nancy Jo Sales for Time. Sales spent 2½ years researching for her book American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers. So she can say with certainty that social media encourages sexualization and bullying. Not surprisingly, girls are at much higher risk than boys are. This is an important read.

TextingOnce upon a time, only the wealthy and privileged could afford to have their portraits painted by a small, select circle of artists. With the advent of photography, parents of all backgrounds could have pictures of their children, which were coveted as documents of their development and a way to show off their innocent beauty and charm to family and friends.

Today, with smartphones and social media, we all have in our hands the means to broadcast our pride and joy to the world. And we are cultivating our children’s online selves from birth—or even before, in utero. Ninety-two percent of American children have an online presence before the age of 2. Parents post nearly 1,000 images of their children online before their fifth birthday. “Sharenting” has given parenting a whole new dimension: viewer-rated performance.

The usual debate centers on whether posting pictures of one’s children’s online—or allowing one’s children to do so—is safe from a privacy or security standpoint. And as we have seen in the recent abduction and murder of 13-year-old Nicole Lovell of Blacksburg, Va., concerns about online predators are more than just a moral panic: they stem from something real. Lovell reportedly texted with one of her alleged killers, 18-year-old David Eisenhauer, a Virginia Tech student, on Kik Messenger, an app known among kids as a place for the exchange of sexts and nude selfies.

The Parousia of the Lord Jesus Christ

19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation? Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming? 20 For you are our glory and joy. (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 NASB)

(1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 NA28)

19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation—is it not even you—before our Lord Jesus, at His coming? 20  For you are our glory and joy.  (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 translated from the NA28 Greek text)

In this post we will look at 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and attempt to unpack Paul’s statement about our Lord’s παρουσια or parousia. What we must never forget my brethren, Christianity is simply another religion if we ignore our Lord’s παρουσίᾳ. It is vital to our doctrines. It is vital to the meaning and purpose of the Gospel. This is why any form of Christian Liberalism attacks both the Doctrine of Hell and the Doctrine of the παρουσίᾳ of Christ. This should make it evident of the power behind these attacks. He is both a liar and a murderer. Therefore, let us open God’s Word and dig into it to feed, learn the truth, and be encouraged in the Lord. View article →

Utah Governor Says Using Anesthesia on Babies Being Murdered May Be “Most Humane” Abortion Method

Christian News Network reports:

The Republican governor of Utah said on Wednesday that he would consider signing a proposed bill requiring the use of anesthesia on babies that are being murdered in the womb, opining that it may be the “most humane” way of ending a child’s life.

Gov. Gary Herbert said that he is personally opposed to abortion, but remarked that if the practice is considered legal in America, it should be carried out as “humanely” as possible.

“You know, abortion is a very emotional issue,” he told reporters at a news conference. “Rather than get into the abortion debate, I guess the question is: If we’re going to have abortion, what is the most humane way to do it?”

Pope Francis calls Donald Trump “not Christian” over wall stance

From Berean Research:

Ironically this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Many Protestants believe that Pope Francis isn’t a true Christian either. Why? Because he teaches a false gospel. (See our White Paper on the RCC). That aside, the Pope of Rome has no business injecting his personal views into American politics the way he has. Could his aim be to sway the election? Two out of six candidates are Catholics — Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio. Would the pontiff like to see a Catholic win the nomination and go on to become the next President of the United States? Of course he would! I mean, think about it. Should either Bush or Rubio become president, the RCC would be in a much better position…..to rule the world.

Beck begs South Carolinians to support Ted Cruz — “Fall to your knees and pray to God to reveal to you what the hour is”

Wolf in sheeps clothing 4What many people don’t realize is that New Age Mormon Glenn Beck held a rally at a “church” whose senior pastor is New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) “Apostle” and wolf in sheep’s clothing Rick Joyner. Beck is in South Carolina stumping for GOP candidate Ted Cruz whose father, Rafael Cruz, is also ensconced in the heretical NAR movement. Just last week the senior Cruz received an “anointing” from Kenneth Copeland, a notorious Word of Faith/prosperity preacher.

According to Breitbart :

At a campaign rally held last week at the MorningStar Fellowship Church in Fort Mill, South Carolina, for GOP presidential hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), radio talk show host Glenn Beck begged those in attendance to support Cruz’s campaign.

“I am telling you right now, this is your last call, America,” Beck proclaimed. “This is your last call.”

A video compilation created by the People for the American Way’s RightWingWatch.org shows Beck imploring attendees to seek God and ask Him who they should vote for in the forthcoming presidential elections.

God’s providence and inheritance

(Ephesians 1:11-12 NA28)

11 In whom also we were made an inheritance, having been predestined according to the plan of the one working all things according to the counsel of His will. 12 For us to be to the praise of His glory, having previously hoped in Christ. (Ephesians 1:11-12 translated from the NA28 Greek text)

Most modern Bible translations undoubtedly render v11 a bit differently than I did above. The words “we were made an inheritance” translates one verb, ἐκληρώθημεν, which is the Aorist tense, Indicative mood, Passive voice of κληρόω or klēroō, “obtain an inheritance. The passive voice is the key. Paul is saying that Christians are made an inheritance by God for God. One of the great misconceptions of our salvation, which is made by so many, is that it is the result of something we do, but how anyone could believe that after reading Ephesians 1 and 2 is beyond me. FCC commissioner: U.S. tradition of free expression slipping away

“I think that poses a special danger to a country that cherishes First Amendment speech, freedom of expression, even freedom of association,” FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai told the Washington Examiner. “I think it’s dangerous, frankly, that we don’t see more often people espousing the First Amendment view that we should have a robust marketplace of ideas where everybody should be willing and able to participate.

“Step Into the Healing Flow and Receive God’s Will For Your Life.” Jennifer LeClaire

Jennifer LeClaire is the senior editor of Charisma Magazine. Recently she made this comment on Facebook.

Healing handsIt’s a John 5:4 season in the body of Christ. Whatever needs healed. Whatever needs restored. Whatever needs new life, the Lord is asking “Do you want to be healed?” He wants to heal you. Don’t let the devil trouble your mind with doubt. Step into the healing flow and receive God’s will for your life.

To which the Museum of Idolatry responded:

Is it really “a John 5:4 season in the body of Christ” as she says?

Well, John 5:4 is the just about the WORST verse in the whole New Testament to be “proclaimed” or “declared” or “decreed.” Some translations of the Bible (The NIV and ESV, for example) don’t even have this verse-they just go from John 5:3 right to John 5:5! Why? Because this is the story of the angel stirring up the pool water that would cause people to get healed, and many experts believe this was inserted into the Bible later. Many reliable and early manuscripts don’t contain this story. The real purpose of this passage is to show that Jesus is God (not that Jesus is your personal genie-in-a-bottle). He’s the God who can (really) heal people, and we are not to trust in a pool that’s been stirred up by an angel-or any other superstition.

Jennifer LeClaire saying: “it’s a John 5:4 season in the body of Christ!” is kinda like saying: “it’s a stirred up pool season in the body of Christ!”

Who are the blessed?

18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling. 19 It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly Than to divide the spoil with the proud. (Proverbs 16:18-19 NASB)

The truly discerning, obedient, Christian who is seeking God’s will in his or her relationship with all in the Body of Christ is not one seeking a fight over every difference. Instead, the stronger brother or sister is to always be about seeking the defense of the conscience of the weaker brethren. In fact, those who are mature in Christ will not seek to have that known among the brethren at all, but are of lowly spirit, but always ready to teach and encourage those willing to be discipled. However, even in this, they know that what they are teaching is what they have received from their Lord and is not of themselves. View article →

“Keep Your $10”: “Christian” Rapper Andy Mineo Mocks Fans, Defends Use of Profanity

Christian News Network has the story:

An unrepentant professing Christian rapper, who is associated with similar artists such as Lecrae, Tedashii and Sho Baraka, is claiming that it is permissible for Christians to use profanity and is arguing in defense of those who profess Jesus but use expletives.

Andy Mineo, known for his “God Belongs in My City” nationwide concert tour, recently began a discussion on his Twitter page by posing the question, “Do you guys really think if a person uses ‘profanity’ (words we’ve given meaning) in their music they couldn’t possibly be Christian? Why?”

The question soon turned into repeated defense as followers opined that profanity is not becoming of a Christian.

“Well, the tongue is ‘full of poison.’ Let me ask this, if a preacher uses profanity on the stage what would that look like?” one follower, identified as Seth, asked.

Gladiator-style takedown of demonic forces (Reprise)

By Marsha West (First published in 2012)

A large number of Christians throughout the world consider themselves to be spiritual warfare prayer warriors. What they do is known as “intercessory prayer.” Most likely these prayer warriors are connected to a deliverance ministry. Deliverance ministers use “strategic level prayer” to “bind” the “territorial spirits” to remove demons who are in control of organizations, communities, cities and in some cases entire nations so that evangelism will go unimpeded. These demon fighting gladiators believe that poverty and other societal troubles will not be eliminated until “demonic strongholds” are torn down and demons are “bound.”

The aim of the Spiritual Warfare movement (SWM) is to take “dominion” over societal institutions and government. Once they have accomplished this lofty goal they’ll take over the kingdoms of this world and build a literal Kingdom of God on earth. This is known as Kingdom Theology.

What is the basic premise of Kingdom Theology?

[M]an lost dominion over the earth when Adam and Eve succumbed to Satan’s temptation in the Garden of Eden. God “lost control” of the earth to Satan at that time, and has since been looking for a “covenant people” who will be His “extension,” or “expression,” in the earth and take dominion back from Satan. This is to be accomplished through certain “overcomers” who, by yielding themselves to the authority of God’s apostles and prophets for the Kingdom Age, will take control of the kingdoms of this world. (Online source)

Kingdom Theology and deliverance/spiritual warfare prayer stem from the New Apostolic Reformation/Dominionism (NAR/DOM). I’ve covered NAR/DOM in other articles that can be read here. The purpose of this piece is the SWM, as this false teaching has spread through Charismatic and Pentecostal churches like a wildfire on a gusty day and it’s rearing its ugly head in conservative churches.

Many spiritual warfare prayer warriors are sincere people who believe what they’re doing is serious work, thus they don’t enter into it lightly and are very cautious when they engage in intercessory prayer. They also admit that they’re still learning the process of warfare prayer. The process they go through to rid the “client” of demons is called “therapy.” A person who’s cleansed of “cosmic beings” is deemed a “survivor.”

Some in the deliverance ministries put their focus on so-called demon possessed people. As I said, many of them are serious sincere people who do not take exorcism lightly — but the fact remains that they’re involved in an unbiblical practice.

So — imagine for a moment a sixty-five year-old woman who has never seen the inside of a gym, toe to toe with a burly man she believes to be possessed, body and soul, by a cosmic being. After a lengthy conversation with the man, she has determined that he’s possessed by a “demon of alcohol.” So the diminutive woman musters up her courage and glares into the drunk’s blood-shot eyes, “In the Name of Jesus Christ,” she bellows, ” I command you, demon of alcohol, depart from this man!” fully believing she has just sent a demon to the pit of hell. She also believes that the drunk has been set free from the demon once and for all.

You may be asking, “If a ‘demon of alcohol’ exists, how could the woman know with certainty that it had packed its bags and fled the scene never to return again?”

Before I answer the question, I need to provide some background on angels and demons. For the Christian to get the facts on creatures that dwell in the spiritual realm he or she must go to the final authority on these sorts of things — the Holy Bible. God reveals what He wants us to know about the supernatural world in the pages of Scripture. Anything beyond what the scriptures expressly teach on angels and demons is nothing more than pure speculation. Those in the SWM have taken speculation to a whole new level for the simple reason that much of their doctrine is based on just that — speculation. Also, they claim they’re receiving “new revelation” that replaces the Word of God even though Paul clearly taught that the revelation he and the other apostles received was the complete and final revelation from Jesus Christ. Paul even cursed those who brought a different gospel:

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (Gal. 1:8)

So, what does Scripture tell us about angels and demons? In Heb. 1:14 it says they are personal spiritual beings. Because they don’t have physical limitations they’re not bound by the laws of physics. Angels possess intellect (Mat. 8:292 Cor. 11:3), emotions (James 2:19Rev. 12:17), and will (Luke 8:28-312 Tim. 2:26).

From the book of Genesis we learn that there was a rebellion in heaven led by the angel Lucifer who wanted to exalt himself above God. The rebel didn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell against Almighty God and he lost the battle, big time. Thereafter Lucifer and one third of the angels who fought alongside him were expelled from the throne room of God. That’s the nutshell version!

There are over 40 names for Lucifer. He is the chief of demons…the god of this world (Earth)…Satan, serpent, devil, evil one, accuser, adversary, dragon, devourer, destroyer, tempter and the wicked one. Some of the names describe his character, i.e. deceiver.

When his time is up Satan won’t just cease to exist, he will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where he will be tormented for eternity. (Rev. 20:10)

Scripture refers to demons as spiritual forces of evil. These creatures are highly intelligent. They’re also vengeful, hateful, cruel, cunning and deceptive, with incredible supernatural powers. Demons are capable of causing physical harm and mental anguish. They have no regard for human life, marriage or the family. They can cause dumbness, deafness and suicide. They can possess the human body as well as animals and influence bodies and minds for evil. (Dabbling in the occult invites demon possession, and for the Christian, demon oppression.)

Demons recognize Christ as “the Son of God” and appeal to Him (Mark 5: 6-7).

One of the ways demons actively oppose the plans of God is by promoting false doctrine.

Ephesians 6:12 states Satan has a hierarchy of demons in his kingdom, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” In verse 15 Paul warns of the “fiery darts of the wicked.” Paul’s fiery dart metaphor was his way of warning believers to “put on the full armor of God” because evil spirits can inflame human emotions. Often times a demon will manipulate its target’s emotions causing him/her to fall into sinful behavior. Wearing the armor of God is the way Christians defend themselves against the forces of evil. (More on the armor of God here)

Satan is not omnipresent which means he cannot be everywhere. Only God is omnipresent. Noted theologian J. I. Packer explains omnipresence thusly:

“God is here, there, and everywhere, and his mind and hand are on everything. We are never out of his sight (Psalm 139), and we cannot get away from him (John 1).”

Which brings me to my point: “Binding Satan” is a complete waste of time and energy. Odds are that the prayer warrior will have a much greater chance of winning the lottery than binding Satan.

Satan is indeed a force to be reckoned with, but his powers are limited. Even so, after his fall from heaven Michael the archangel would not confront him without seeking the Lord’s help (Jude 1:9).

The following is an excerpt from Biblical Discernment Ministries (BDM) essay entitled Spiritual Warfare: Can a Believer Be Demon Possessed?:

[T]he only legitimate casting out of demons happened in the time of Christ and the apostles. This demonstrated that Jesus truly was the Messiah the Old Testament predicted would come. The Jews at that time would recognize that casting out of demons meant that the Messiah was present and offering the kingdom to the nation Israel. The apostles were given this authority to cast out demons as representatives of Christ. This authority cannot be transferred to anyone else.

The sign miracles Jesus performed were special and unique. No one has ever duplicated the miracles Jesus performed to confirm his messianic claims. Every false teacher and cult leader today claims “sign miracles” as a way of confirming their false teaching. None of them has walked on water. None of them has called a person who has been dead four days out of the grave with the words, “Come forth!” Moreover, no so-called miracle worker has been resurrected after death — not even famed faith-healer Kathryn Kuhlman.

Not only did Jesus raise the dead, after He was beaten to a bloody pulp, crucified and died, He came out of the tomb very much alive. His face was no longer disfigured from the beating he took, and there wasn’t a speck of blood on His resurrected body, only marks in His hands and feet where spikes were driven through flesh and bone and an opening where a Roman soldier drove a spear into His body. Moreover, after the resurrection Jesus appeared to more than 500 people at one time. (More on the resurrection account here)

What many Christians fail to realize is that although God continues to perform miracles today the “signs and wonders” we find in the Bible are not the norm today.

Earlier in the article we learned that when Satan was allowed to run Job through the ringer, he did not “speak to Satan, bind him, or send him to the pit. Job’s responsibility was to be faithful, resist, and stand firm.”

Later BDM says:

In the book of Revelation, demonic activity picks up again. But even in the sections which are addressed to the churches (chapters 1-3), there are no directions for speaking to demons. Even with the Church living under demonic pressure, where Satan’s throne was (Rev. 2:13), there were no commands to bind and/or cast out Satan and his demons. When Jesus spoke to the church at Thyatira, He did not say, “Bind Satan” or “You have a territorial demon, drive him out.” Even those believers who were under the influence of the wicked Jezebel were not told to break her demonic power. Revelation gives us a glimpse into the demonic world and what is taking place behind the scenes. However, we do not have any situation where believers are running around binding and casting out demons.

More from BDM:

It is all too common today for a spiritual warfare teacher to get up and bombard his listeners with story after story, experience after experience, from which he draws conclusions that form his views on spiritual warfare. More often than not, this kind of “skyscraper preaching” (sermons with one story stacked upon another) results in an approach to spiritual warfare that is built upon practices and techniques which do not measure up to God’s Word.

For example: often one begins to teach that Christians can be demon-possessed or something similar; Christians can inherit curses from parents; Christians need deliverance from certain kinds of sins in addition to the forgiveness received at salvation; Christians need to speak or do things to protect themselves and their loved ones from the demonic; Christians can boss Satan around by rebuking, binding, taking authority over him, or running him out of town, usually by sundown, all in the name of Jesus; demons occupy territories because of specific sins of those people which supposedly have given a basis for the demonic stronghold, instead of by permission of the sovereign will of God. These kinds of beliefs are mere superstition, the product of false mystical experiences which do not match up with the teaching of Holy Writ.

Getting back to the question posed earlier, would the “spirit of alcohol” flee when confronted by an exorcist, never to return? No — for the simple reason that there is no such thing as a “spirit of alcohol.”

Rest assured there is no spirit of any sinful human trait. Our peccadillos are works of the flesh:

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, strife, jealousy, wrath, selfishness, divisions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like. (Galatians 5:19-21)

Paul states that “they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

The fruits of the Spirit are:

“love, joy, peace, longsuffering [patience], gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness [humility], self-control.” (Galatians 5:2223)

Part 2 exposes false teachers who invented spiritual warfare prayer out of their fertile imaginations.

Give me a broken heart that yet carries home the water of grace

24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? (Romans 7:24 NASB)

All genuine Christians have one thing in common—they are imperfect people who, no matter how much they desire to be Christlike, will struggle with the paradox of being new creations slowly becoming conformed to the image of their Saviour while being mired in a body of death that wants to be ruled by their old sin nature. How often do we cry out to God to release us from this prison? What good can it do for us to struggle so with the demands of the flesh? View article →
