Justice Department apologizes, finally admits Obama IRS singled out conservatives

According to Fox News:

The Trump administration, after years of litigation, has settled lawsuits with Tea Party and other conservative groups who say they were unfairly targeted by the IRS under the Obama administration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced early Thursday that the Justice Department had entered into settlements with Tea Party groups whose tax-exempt status was significantly delayed by the IRS dating back to 2013, “based solely on their viewpoint or ideology.”

The settlements involve payments to the plaintiffs and an apology from the IRS.

Joseph Farah – Ignorance, Pandering or Deception?

Steve Lumbley of Apostasy Watch begins with a quote from a piece Joseph Farah wrote. And then he takes WND’s publisher to task for what, in his view, is a misinterpretation of Isaiah 49. Is Joe Farah simply deceived, or what? Let’s find out what Steve Lumbley has to say. After that read Isaiah 49 in context to determine the author’s purpose. Lumbley writes:

Joseph Farah is the publisher of the popular news website World Net Daily. He is also as you might guess an ardent Zionist. After reading this recent column I have to wonder – is he ignorant, is he pandering to his Jewish friends or is he purposely deceiving gullible Christians?

Isaiah 49 is universally understood to be a Messianic prophecy. It is about the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. It is about a spiritual light, a spiritual restoration and a spiritual salvation. One thing that Isaiah 49 is NOT about is the modern geopolitical state of Israel.

In changing the meaning of Isaiah 49, Joseph Farah follows the lead of Jewish Rabbi’s who deny the Lordship of Christ. In order to deceive the people into rejecting Jesus they change the subject of these prophecies from Christ to the nation of Israel. Thus in this case the ‘light to the gentiles and salvation to the whole earth’ become the duty and purpose of the modern Zionist state, not Christ who they insist has not yet come.

A Missive Against False Teachers

The late Ken Silva posted the following at Apprising Ministries in 2011:

Just as in times past there were false prophets in Israel, there are now false teachers among us. They’ve cunningly introduced destructive heresies. They  even deny the Lord who, through His atonement bought them. By doing these things these false teachers will bring swift destruction on themselves!

Many are following their shameful ways and they are causing the way of truth to be mocked and ridiculed. In their greed these false teachers are exploiting  the church with stories they have made up. But, their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction is certain.

What are these false teachers thinking? Don’t they know that in the past, God did not spare angels when they sinned! God sent them to hell, and put them in chains to be held for judgment. God also did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its wicked and ungodly people. God only saved Noah, a man who was a preacher of righteousness, along with seven other people. God also condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to the ground. God did this to make an example of them and clearly show us what is going to happen to wicked and ungodly people.

Are you a good soldier of Christ Jesus?

3 Take your part in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:3 (translated from the NA28 Greek text)

One of the examples God continually uses in my walk to draw me away from being self-focused into being Christ-focused, repentant, and, therefore, usable in His Kingdom is John Bunyan. Why? I have a tendency to focus inward and with that comes a  sense of my sinfulness and unworthiness to even be called a Christian. I look at those whom God uses to feed me spiritually and I see how small I am. How can God use one such as me? God has helped me through this by showing me through the life of men like John Bunyan that His ways are not man’s ways and we are much better off being in the center of His will than where our flesh wants us to be. What do I mean? The well educated and those with large ministries are more often then not the ones who are on the road to apostasy just as in Bunyan’s day. Bunyan was barely educated and his only education in theology was from the Word of God and sitting at the feet of his pastor. God raised him up to do a mighty work in the Church, but it was one that involved much suffering. Has God changed how He does things? View article →

Michael Brown Again Promotes Fake Rabbi and False Prophet, Jonathan Cahn

Let there be no doubt that Jonathan Cahn is a false prophet for the reason that his prophecies haven’t come to pass. Dr. Michael Brown certainly knows that, right? Yet Pulpit & Pen News reports that Brown interviewed Cahn on Line of Fire “to help him sell yet another book attempting to portend future events.” One cannot help but wonder why a highly regarded Bible scholar like Brown would want to sell the books of a false prophet like Cahn to those who tune into his show, those who trust his judgment. “Keep in mind,” reminds P&P, “Cahn’s failed Shemitah prophecies followed on the heels of The Harbinger, which also contained failed prophecies.” Here’s P&P’s report:

How many times does someone have to make false prophecies before you can call them a false prophet? According to the Bible, the answer is “only once” (Deuteronomy 18:22). How many time does someone have to make false prophecies before Michael Brown calls them a false prophet? There doesn’t seem to be a limit.

Twenty-five months ago today, Jonathan Cahn’s The Mystery of the Shemitah prophecy failed to come to fruition. His New York Times best-selling book (it made it to #2 in prophecy, #3 in religion and #129 in books overall) claimed that America was on a seven-year cycle and that upon the Jewish “Shemitah” there would be an imminent national collapse, signaling God’s final judgment of the nation. The charismatic prophets – including Dr. Michael Brown – all nodded their heads in approval of Cahn’s thesis, with Charisma Mag writing, 10 Things that are Going to Happen Within 15 Days of the End of Shemitah. When asked on September 23, 2015 where he stood on the Shemitah (two days before it was to end), Dr. Brown said, “the jury is still out, and we will watch and see what is going to happen in the coming weeks.”

Should Christians Participate in Halloween? 7 Scriptures to Consider

Is it appropriate for evangelicals to celebrate Halloween? Some say “absolutely not” while others say “what’s the big deal anyway?” Bible study author, speaker and blogger Michelle Lesley goes right to the scriptures to help Bible believing Christians make their decision.  She writes:

Since there is no specific Bible verse that says, “Thou shalt/shalt not participate in Halloween and its related activities,” this is an area of Christian liberty that must be decided by each individual or couple on the basis of scriptural principles and prayer. If there are Halloween activities available to you that do not violate scriptural principles or your conscience or cause you to become a stumbling block to someone weaker in the faith (which may even be your spouse or child), you are free to participate in those aspects of Halloween. ‘Smoking gun’ email reveals Obama DOJ blocked conservative groups from settlement funds

According to Fox News:

Photo credit: South Carolina Tea Party Coalition

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee claims he obtained a “smoking gun” email that proves the Obama Justice Department prevented settlement payouts from going to conservative-leaning organizations, even as liberal groups were awarded money and DOJ officials denied “picking and choosing” recipients.

“It is not every day in congressional investigations that we find a smoking gun,” Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said Tuesday. “Here, we have it.”

While Eric Holder was U.S. attorney general, the Justice Department allowed prosecutors to strike agreements compelling big companies to give money to outside groups not connected to their cases to meet settlement burdens. Republican lawmakers long have decried those payments as a “slush fund” that boosted liberal groups, and the Trump DOJ ended the practice earlier this year.

The world does not know genuine Christians because it does not know God

28 And now little children, abide in Him that when He is manifested, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone practicing righteousness has been born of Him. 1 John 2:28-29 (translated from the NA28 Greek text)

How is it that people who profess faith as Christians and supposedly placed their faith in the Incarnate Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, actually display a moralistic, therapeutic, deistic religiosity that is centered in their own moral uprightness. We find this in Church leaders such as pastors and especially scholars at the seminary and denominational level, but, sadly, because of the former, highly prevalent in the pews. In 1 John 2:28-3:10, the Apostle John gives us “evidence” that is most definitely not “politically correct” that will enable us to determine those who really are the genuine children of God and those who aren’t. Of course, we should take a close examination of ourselves as we go through this passage. View article →

‘Hollywood Is the World’s Capital of Hypocrisy,’ Says Screenwriter

Evidently people are bored with movies that don’t tell stories anymore. Screenwriter Roger L. Simon believes the reasons for bland storytelling that bores people is the “overuse of special effects and the fear of offending social justice warriors.”LifeZette has the story:

Hollywood is having a rough time getting audiences to theaters. Plagued with scandals surrounding filmmakers like Harvey Weinstein and James Toback, the industry has been struggling to connect with the average moviegoer.

After a disastrous summer that saw only a handful of hits, the box office is entering another slump. This last weekend saw low openings for major motion pictures, such as the $120 million “Geostorm” and “The Snowman,” which was executive-produced by Martin Scorsese. The only film to earn a sizable sum was Tyler Perry’s “Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.”

Robert Jeffress Demands Apologies from Critics, Claims Hannity Interview Shared The Gospel

According to Pulpit & Pen:

Recently, Robert Jeffress interviewed Roman Catholic political activist Sean Hannity during the Sunday Morning service at his church (Read more about this here). About this, Nebraska senator Ben Sasse (R) Tweeted about this, “Christians: Are we really this ignorant of the Scriptures?” He then quoted John 18:36 as saying, “Jesus answered, ‘My Kingdom is not of this world.’”

In response to this criticism, Jeffress shared an article and claimed, “You’ve got a Rep. senator who is criticizing what a pastor & his church are doing to share the gospel. Sen Sasse owes our church an apology.” However, when one looks through the interview, the Gospel is entirely absent from the interview.

We must remember that God is Sovereign

1 Nebuchadnezzar the king to all the peoples, nations, and men of every language that live in all the earth: “May your peace abound! 2 It has seemed good to me to declare the signs and wonders which the Most High God has done for me. 3 “How great are His signs And how mighty are His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom And His dominion is from generation to generation. Daniel 4:1-3 (NASB)

The deepest, widest blind spot that most professing Christians have is that they are convinced their religion pleases God. Pride disguises itself in many different ways. One that I have noticed in most professing Christians is a form of self-righteousness that sees their religion as making them so well-pleasing to God that anyone who is not part of their denomination or church could not possibly be right with God. Pragmatism springs from a desire by spiritually blind Christian leaders to mimic what other “successful” preachers or pastors do to grow their congregations or baptize huge numbers of converts. When these manipulating processes “seem to work” the first result is actually a deepening of that spiritual blindness. Why? Idolatry always produces spiritual blindness. This blindness keeps those in it deceived into believing a lie. What lie? The lie is that God is not totally sovereign and needs their help to further the Kingdom. Their religious efforts may appear to “work,” but since the results are the fruit of fleshly methods and the works of men they only lead to cultivating pride. However, we must remember that God is Sovereign. View article →

Hollywood’s Plunge into the Bottomless Pit

We cannot log into our electronic media without seeing the face of film producer Harvey Weinstein on almost every news site; likewise, that chubby face is all over TV news stations and magazine covers. The photo of Weinstein, unshaven for several days with a diabolical look in his eyes, is everywhere. Why? Because the Hellywood (not a typo) mogul has been accused by a growing number of actresses and models of everything from sexual harassment to rape. Most of you are aware of the crimes this man allegedly committed so I won’t rehash it here. Those who haven’t heard the story can do a Google search. But before you dig in, take an antacid.

One last thing before I get to my point. According to reports, pretty much everyone in Hellywood was aware of Weinstein’s, now admitted to, reprehensible treatment of women and chose not to out him. Victims didn’t spill the beans because attorneys on Harvey’s payroll paid them big bucks for their silence. Oh to be filthy rich, a powerful studio executive, and recipient of an Academy Award!

Now to my point. For several years I’ve exposed the ways in which the Hellywood elites sexualize tweens and teens (articles below). Back in 2011 I wrote a piece entitled “Tinseltown’s on a mission to sexualize young girls” that came to mind when Harvey Weinstein became the big story. I realized that, although it was written six years ago, it contains information that is pertinent today. So rather than writing a new piece on Tinseltown, I’m re-posting a chunk of my old piece with minor changes. The re-post has nothing to do with the disgraced Hellywood producer. It’s not even about the entertainment industry’s plunge into the bottomless pit.  No. I’m going to address the collateral damage that invariably occurs when a nation loses its moral compass. Who suffers? You guessed it. Children. Not knowing any better, kids dive right into the pit with their heroes.

I’ll begin from the beginning:

Wholesome teen star “Hannah Montana”

By Marsha West

There are some disturbing things going on right under parents’ noses.  Their daughters are being sexualized by Hollywood elites who would sell their soul to the devil (perhaps they have) to make a buck and/or to win a coveted Oscar, Emmy, or Golden Globe award.  Life is so about them!

This will come as no surprise to anyone: The Parents TV Council (PTC) report entitled “Sexualized Teen Girls: Tinsel Town’s New Target” provides proof that many in the media have their sights set on young girls for the purpose of sexualizing them.

Have these people completely lost their moral compass?  Have they no shame?  Yes and no.  They are immoral, shameless, child exploiters who could care less who they hurt as long as the ratings remain high and they receive that big paycheck.  And, quite honestly, in our wicked, depraved, immoral culture, sex sells.

These are the major findings in PTC’s 2011 report:

Why millennials are ditching religion for witchcraft and astrology

From Berean Research:

In our White Paper Sorcery – Occult, we advise:

The Bible details the occult practices that are expressly forbidden by God. He banned sorcery then and He bans it now. Moreover, those who practice these sorts of things are an abomination – detestable. In the case of the Israelites all charms for diseases, all amulets or spells to prevent evil, fortune-telling (looking into the future), contacting the dead – any of the magic arts were considered wicked.

It matters not what others do, what does matter is what God says:

There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. And because of these abominations the LORD your God is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless before the LORD your God, for these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune-tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do this (Deuteronomy 18:10-14). (emphases added)

While interest in religion is waning, witchcraft and astrology are becoming more and more normalized, especially among millennials.  Kari Paul’s article appears in MarketWatch.

When Coco Layne, a Brooklyn-based producer, meets someone new these days, the first question that comes up in conversation isn’t “Where do you live?” or “What do you do?” but “What’s your sign?”

“So many millennials read their horoscopes every day and believe them,” Layne, who is involved in a number of nonreligious spiritual practices, said. “It is a good reference point to identify and place people in the world.”

FBI Informant Must Be Allowed to Speak on ‘Uranium One’ Deal

According to Kathryn Blackhurst of LifeZette:

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) urged the Justice Department to remove a nondisclosure agreement preventing a confidential former FBI informant from testifying before Congress for the criminal probe into the Uranium One deal.

DeSantis, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said in an interview on Fox News on Sunday that he has spoken with the informant who “helped the FBI uncover this bribery scheme,” leading to bombshell reports about an Obama-era deal allowing a Russian-backed company to purchase a uranium firm that controls mines in the U.S. At the time of the deal, 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was serving as secretary of state, and several investors in Uranium One were Clinton Foundation donors and had ties to her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

The Safest Shelter

And a man shall be as an hiding-place from the wind and a covert from the tempest. (Isaiah 32:2)

Who this Man is we all know. Who could He be but the Second Man, the Lord from heaven, the man of sorrows, the Son of Man? What a hiding place He has been to His people! He bears the full force of the wind Himself, and so He shelters those who hide themselves in Him.

We have thus escaped the wrath of God, and we shall thus escape the anger of men, the cares of this life, and the dread of death. Why do we stand in the wind when we may so readily and so surely get out of it by hiding behind our Lord?  View article →

A Song of Resurrection

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD (Psalm 40:2-3).

The Holy Spirit spoke marvelously through David, causing him to record his own experiences and yet express truths that were beyond his experience. His language grew greater than the event he was trying to describe. The only ultimate fulfillment was to be in those coming days when the Messiah would appear among men in the flesh. Psalm 40 is, in a sense, our Lord’s own autobiography. He Himself tells us why He came to earth, what was accomplished, and what His experiences were.

This is a description of resurrection. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire or, as the Hebrew has it, out of the pit of tumult, out of a terrible experience, out of a place of desolation and despair and death. View article →

Is the Bible’s treatment of homosexuality ‘complicated’?

From Berean Research:

This is an important read. Denny Burk, Professor of Biblical Studies at Boyce College, has written a book review of “Single Gay Christian.” In his review Burk explains that a growing number of Christians honestly believe that a Christian can identify as gay and remain celibate — that being gay is “central to my identity.” In other words, being gay is something that defines certain people and is at the core of a person’s being and that sexual attractions are not just how he/she is but who he/she is.

Burk does not buy this, of course. He cannot reconcile this view with Scripture. “Scripture teaches explicitly that homosexual desire and behavior are “against nature”—meaning against God’s original creation design (Rom. 1:26-27).” Burk points out that–and this is important to understand–“Much of the evangelical conversation on these issues has been colonized by secular identity theories. Those theories are premised on an unbiblical anthropology which defines human identity as ‘what I feel myself to be’ rather than ‘what God designed me to be.’” (emphasis added) Taking this into account, professing Christians should listen to his advice and “think their way through to biblical clarity on sexuality and gender issues.”

Here’s Professor Burk’s thought provoking review of “Single Gay Christian”:

I just finished reading Gregory Coles’ moving memoir Single Gay Christian: A Personal Journey of Faith and Sexual Identity (IVP, 2017). In many ways, there is much to admire about this book. Coles is a great writer and has put together a real page-turner. This is not a boring book. Coles’ honesty and vulnerability come through in just about every page. Coles is telling his own story—warts and all—and he’s gut-wrenchingly honest about his emerging awareness of himself as a same-sex attracted man.

Beware of Joseph Farrah and Joe Kovacs of WND

Glenn Chatfield of The Watchman’s Bagpipes posted the warning. CRN has also warned our readers to beware of WND (once called Worldnet Daily) as the owner, Joe Farah, is a big time promoter of false teachers and conspiracy theories (here):

Over the past few years there has been an individual providing me information about Joseph Farrah and Joe Kovacs and the Armstrongism heresy.  I get lots of bits and pieces, but collecting it all and making a cohesive article would take too much time since I have no real background knowledge.  I asked the individual if he would consider writing a guest article with all the information he has, and he said he would consider it sometime.  I know he’s busy so I don’t expect anything anytime soon!  At any rate, today’s weekly email from Don Veinot of Midwest Christian Outreach included the item below, which I think gives enough information about these guys to be able to mark and avoid them.  Oh, and I dropped WND as a news source years ago because I found them to have too much sensationalism.

Worship in the Wilderness

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever (Psalm 23:5-6).

In verses 5 and 6 David changes the metaphor a bit–from the good shepherd to the gracious host. Jehovah spreads a sumptuous meal before him, a great banquet, in the presence of his enemies. This figure encompasses all the figures David has used before. That God feeds and provides, leads and protects, is all bound up in this symbol of a gracious host.

Interestingly enough, this figure grows right out of the historical situation in which David wrote. When David was driven into the wilderness by his son’s rebellion, he found himself out in the desert, hungry and weary, his army in disarray. As recorded in 2 Samuel 17, three men who were not even Israelites, Shobi, Machir, and Barzillai brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils, honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat. For they said, ‘The people have become hungry and tired and thirsty in the desert’(2 Samuel 17:28-29). View article →

In 2,500 words on abusive psycho-spiritual group, New York Times buries crucial four-letter word

Evidently when it comes to using the word “cult” there’s “skittishness” in news stories about religious or spiritual communities claims Mark Killner in a piece over at GetReligion. “Church historians, sociologists and others debate definitions of this term and much can be learned by paying attention to their discussions.” Killner has the story:

Anyone who has followed the history of new religious movements in the United States and elsewhere knows that, since the 1970s, the word “cult” is one four-letter word newspapers have often been loath to apply to controversial groups.

That wasn’t the case before and after the 1978 Jonestown massacre, when newspapers saw cults under almost every rock.

But now, there’s a great reticence at using this particular four-letter word in many news organizations. What, however, can a newspaper do when a group really and truly has the markings of a, well, cult, at the level of sociology and human behavior? Do you use the word or bury it?

5 Reasons Jesus Doesn’t Want us to be Like the Good Samaritan

Are there hidden truths in the parable of the good Samaritan? Does it have something to do with loving other people and being involved in social justice? Jordan Standridge of The Cripplegate fills us in on what he believes Jesus is actually saying in the parable. He writes:

The good Samaritan is perhaps the most misunderstood parable in the Bible. Dozens of ministries have been started with a desire to emulate the good Samaritan.

Hundreds of theologians have tried to pull out hidden truths from this parable and have come up with completely different ideas.

Some teach that Jesus desires to expose the Jericho road and that we would live in a day and age where good Samaritans are no longer needed.  Others expose the need to tear down walls between enemies, and others–probably the typical evangelical Christian–see in the good Samaritan a call to love other people and to be involved in social justice.

But is that what Jesus is saying in this parable?
