The Ownership of the Name “Calvary Chapel,” the Dove and the Appearance of a New Symbol

Roger Oakland of Understand the Times examines what has been going on inside Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa since the passing of Pastor Chuck Smith, founder of the Calvary Chapel movement..  Oakland asks some important questions such as “Who really owns the Calvary Chapel name?”

A new symbol has appeared at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa (CCCM). Some may be wondering if this new symbol will be replacing the Calvary “dove” that has symbolized Calvary Chapel for decades. For now, at least, the dove logo seems to have gone “undercover” on the back wall behind the podium at CCCM and replaced by another symbol projected on the wall. Those who attend Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa will have seen it and know what I mean. Or if you receive ”tweets” via Twitter from Brian Brodersen, Chuck Smith’s son-in-law, you will have seen the new symbol. Brodersen inherited the pulpit at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa because of his marriage to Chuck Smith’s daughter, Cheryl. Since Pastor Chuck passed away, many changes have occurred at CCCM as the “new Calvary” replaces the “old Calvary” under new leadership.

Below is the banner used to promote Brian Brodersen’s Sunday morning study for Revelation 9:13-21 on March 6, 2016 that was sent out by Twitter:

LifeWay & Beth Moore: What Ails Us

Bud Ahlheim of Pulpit & Pen illuminates us on Beth Moore’s troubling teaching.  Despite all the warnings and wake up calls Bereans are shouting from the rooftops, many women still idolize Mrs. Moore and choose to follow her decidedly unbiblical, and oftentimes dangerous, teaching as you will see here:

This email was waiting for me in my inbox this morning.  It’s from LifeWay Women. Now, I’m not a woman, and I don’t remember signing up for emails from this gender-specific marketing arm of the heresy peddlers in Nashville.  Still, I’m not unsubscribing because, paraphrasing what my mom used to say to me, it shows “just what ails us”.  (Mom actually used the query “What ails you?” as a stern form of maternal correction.  Most of the time I got the message!  Hmmm, maybe Beth needs a stern “What ails you?” warning from someone.)

bm

If you have basic discernment skills, the email screen grab above shows exactly what “ails us”.

That Beth Moore is a false teacher is granted, and obvious to most.  LifeWay must be making oodles of cash from promoting her nonsense.  In case you haven’t been paying attention, LifeWay isn’t exactly known as a responsible, discerning affiliate of the Southern Baptist Convention.  The SBC just disregards the obvious concerns that ought to be causing air-raid heresy sirens to blare.  But, nah, never mind that.

Now, back to the email graphic above.

“Pathological” Ben Carson Endorses Trump: “There is a Lot More Alignment Spiritually Than I Ever Thought”

According to Christian News Network:

Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, a Seventh-Day Adventist who denies eternal punishment, endorsed billionaire business mogul Donald Trump, who identifies a Presbyterian, on Friday morning.

“I have found in talking with [Donald Trump] that … there is a lot more alignment philosophically and spiritually then I ever thought that there was,” he said at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. “That actually surprised me more than anything.”

Carson, who praised the candidate’s “guts” and “energy,” said that he has discovered that there are two sides to Trump.

Who are these Christians?

30 ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν. (John 10:30 NA28)

30 “I and the Father are one.” John 10:30 translated from the NA28 Greek text)

Genuine Christianity, not the false versions of it, is unique when compared to the world’s religions. In fact, those false versions of it are just like the rest of the world’s religions in one regard that makes genuine Christianity absolutely unique. All other “religions” are based upon some form of works based theology and belief system in which some form of justification is made through those works which increase the value of the person in that religion thereby gaining the reward. On the other hand, genuine Christianity is nothing like that at all. Salvation or justification comes as a result of something God has set out to do and has completed. Those who are justified were elected by him before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1) based upon no works or deeds or value inherent in them  (that none may boast). All of the work to justify these elect was done by God and completed; and he, being sovereign and all-powerful, saves them all as we will see in the short passage we will exegete below. Those who are saved are new creations after their justification because God himself regenerated them so that their dead faith is made alive and they are now able to believe the gospel and be saved (Ephesians 2:1-10; Titus 3:5). Who believes? Who are these Christians? View article →

Wounded Warrior Project’s top execs reportedly fired amid lavish spending scandal

Fox News reports:

DEVELOPING STORY: The two top executives of the Wounded Warrior Project — among the largest veterans charities in the country — were fired Thursday after an investigation into accusations of lavish spending on parties, hotel and travel, CBS News reported.

Wounded Warrior Project’s CEO, Steven Nardizzi, and COO, Al Giordano, were fired by the charity’s board amid criticisms about how it spends more than $800 million raised in donations in the past four years, CBS News reported.

The charity’s board of directors made their decision after a meeting in New York City, where they received preliminary results of a financial and policy audit, sources told CBS News.

The charity came under fire after an earlier CBS News investigation in January revealed large amounts of spending on administration, meetings, and travel.

‘Young Messiah’ makes merchandise of men’s souls

Movies such as this one are theologically dangerous warns Berean Research.  The executive producer of the film, Chris Columbus, also produced two Harry Potter films. Columbus said in an interview that “Young Messiah” is the “greatest story never told.”  He also said that he had a team of theologians looking over his shoulder and according to them the film is historically accurate and “orthodox.”  That is highly unlikely since the film is based on Anne Rice’s novel “Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt.” Prior to writing about the life of Christ, Rice penned a series of books about vampires, became famous, and made a small fortune.  And then she set her sights on Jesus.

Anyone who has read the Bible knows that the scriptures are silent on Jesus’ life as a child; thus, anything written about Him at age 7 is shear speculation!  What’s troubling about all this is that gullible people are going to believe the story’s true. Even worse — professing Christians will see this train wreck and (good grief!) they’ll purchase the merchandise.

Now to BR’s piece:

You can’t have a Christiollywood blockbuster without the bling.  While you won’t find Young Messiah Happy Meal toys in your fast food, the Jesus trading cards and games introduce a whole new kind of fandom.

Screen Shot 2016-03-10 at 2.50.26 PM Screen Shot 2016-03-10 at 2.54.46 PM

Successful movies require bling. Successful Christian genre films require endorsements and film-based preaching. From sermon guides and resources to small group study materials, the film is quickly making merchandise of men’s souls.

Texas Superintendents Vote to Require Athletes to Show Birth Certificates to Prove Gender

According to Christian News Network:

School district superintendents in Texas recently voted to require student athletes to provide proof of their gender by submitting a copy of their birth certificate.

The new policy, passed by a 586-32 vote, ensures that boys do not play on girls’ teams and girls do not play on boys’ teams.

“Member schools may not permit boys to try out for or participate under the jr. high school or high school athletic plans designated for girls’ teams,” the policy reads, noting the same for girls. “Member schools that offer cross country, golf, swimming, tennis, track and field and/or wrestling individual athletic plans may not permit mixed plans for boys and girls.”

Boston Catholics demanding the name of “St. Patrick” be removed from upcoming “St. Patrick’s Day Parade.”

MassResistance reports:

The Boston-based Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, in conjunction with MassResistance, is calling on people of faith everywhere to demand that organizers of the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade remove the name “St. Patrick” from its title.

This will be the second year that two openly homosexual groups, OUTVETS and Boston Pride, with their “gay” banners and other distinctive mannerisms (men dancing together, etc), will be part of it. (OUTVETS is a contrived “gay veterans” group created by employees of the Mayor of Boston specifically for the purpose of getting into the parade.)

The sword that divides

34 Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν· οὐκ ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἀλλὰ μάχαιραν. (Matthew 10:34 NA28)

34 Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword. (Matthew 10:34 translated from the NA28 Greek text)

The peace that Christians have because they are in Christ is between them and God and because of that, with each other. However, that does not mean that there will be peace between them and those not in Christ. In fact, these words of our Lord in Matthew 10:34-38 make it clear that those truly in Christ will be so changed by the Gospel, the presence of the Holy Spirit in them, and their new nature that there will be inevitable separation between them and those who are not in Christ. This holds true even within families. This is true because the genuine believer is so changed that no matter what sort of pressure comes to bear on them, they simply cannot be at peace with the ways of the world or the ways of the flesh. Their conscience is bound to Christ and His Word while those not in Christ have consciences bound to the flesh no matter how religious they are. View article →

Administration Official: “Our Streets Are Flooded With Heroin” With Much of It “Coming From Mexico”

According to CNSNews:

An official with the Obama administration said on Tuesday that the “streets are flooded with heroin” in the United States and much of it “is coming from Mexico.”

Mary Lou Leary, deputy director of State, Local and Tribal Affairs for the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), spoke at the National League of Cities Conference in Washington, D.C. During a confence-workshop on heroin addiction and prevention, CNSNews.com asked Leary about the need to address border security and drug cartels to combat the opioid crisis.

“I think there’s another issue I’m sure that the chief really appreciates and that is, ‘Where is this heroin coming from?’” Leary said, noting fellow panelist, Pittsburgh Chief of Police Cameron McLay, who spoke about law enforcement’s role battling heroin.

Jim Daly Joins Muslim Sheikh and Robot Spiritual Guide at Ecumenical Culture Conference

Jim Daly is the CEO of Focus on the Family which is (or was) a Christian organization. According to Jeff Maples of Pulpit & Pen not one topic listed includes the name of Jesus, even though the conference is supposedly a Christian event.

I do not sit with men of falsehood, nor do I consort with hypocrites. I hate the the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked. Psalm 26:4-5

What could better describe an “assembly of evildoers” than an ecumenical conference that includes Muslim Sheikhs, Native American pagans, and, I wish I were making this up, a man who will give a presentation on offering spiritual guidance to robots.

The Q Denver conference, in April 2016, will host a multitude of quasi-religious leaders as well as secular experts of various fields, to preach and teach on cultural issues. The website states,

As our culture changes, Christians have an incredible opportunity…we will explore what renewal and faithfulness might look like in society today…From the ideas and current issues shaping society to the truth that transforms the world, you will be informed and gain confidence that God is at work in his mission to renew all things…Education by thought leaders and stories from change-makers will inspire a hopeful way forward.

Language proves God’s existence, prof says

Baptist Press reports:

Evidence for the existence of God is, quite literally, on the tip of your tongue, says Southern Baptist professor Jeremy Lyon.

Lyon, associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, Ga., and John Baumgardner, a geophysicist who teaches at Southern California Seminary in El Cajon, Calif., argue the existence of language points to the existence of God.

Because language is not comprised merely of physical matter, it must have a source that is separate from the physical universe, Lyon and Baumgardner wrote in an article for the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society (JETS) titled “A Linguistic Argument for God’s Existence.” That source, they asserted, can only be God.

Our Lord’s High Priestly Prayer

1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, 2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. (John 17:1-2 NASB)

In John 17, we have the transition marking the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the beginning of His intercessory ministry for all believers (Hebrews 7:25). This has been called “The High Priestly Prayer,” however; it does summarize John’s entire Gospel. For instance, its principal themes include Jesus’ obedience to His Father, the glorification of His Father through His death and exaltation, the revelation of God in Jesus Christ, the choosing of the disciples out of the world, their unity modeled on the unity of the Father and the Son, and the believers final destiny in the presence of the Father and Son. There are three main sections to this prayer. In vv1-5, we have Jesus’ prayer for Himself. In vv 6-19, we have Jesus’ prayer for the apostles. In vv20-26 we have Jesus’ prayer for all New Testament believers who will form the Church. View article →

New York Mayor Signs Order to Allow Use of City Restrooms, Locker Rooms Based on “Gender Identity”

According to Christian News Network:

The Democratic mayor of New York City has signed an executive order that allows those of the opposite sex to use city-owned restroom facilities and locker rooms in accordance with their “gender identity.”

The order applies to parks, pool areas, playgrounds, recreation centers, office buildings and other city-owned facilities, and allows persons to use the desired restrooms without having to first show identification or any medical documentation.

“Today’s order makes it clear that New York City fully supports the right of every New Yorker to use the single-sex facility consistent with their gender identity,” Bill de Blasio said in a statement. “New York City is the birthplace of the fight for LGBT rights, and we continue to lead in that fight so every New Yorker can live with dignity.”

Jesus Didn’t Say Anything about Homosexuality

Greg Koukl and Alan Shlemon of Stand to Reason tackle what has become a highly contentious issue in the visible Church.  Since Jesus didn’t talk about homosexuality, as some people claim, that must mean it’s okay to be gay, right?  But what about Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13, Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, and 1 Timothy 1:9-11, where homosexual behavior is condemned?

HomosexualityIf you’ve ever claimed that Scripture says homosexual behavior is a sin, there’s a good chance someone tried to correct you with, “Jesus never said anything about homosexuality.” It doesn’t matter what Bible verse bolsters your claim, Jesus’ silence on the matter allegedly trumps all other considerations. Here are seven reasons why this objection doesn’t work.

First of all, Jesus didn’t need to say anything about homosexuality. No first century Jew questioned whether homosexual sex was morally permissible. That’s because every Old Testament reference, poem, or metaphor that addresses sex and marriage in a positive way presumes heterosexual relations. Furthermore, every reference to homosexuality in the Old Testament is negative. There was no debate as to what the biblical witness was on that behavior. God-fearing Jews already believed homosexual sex was prohibited.

Second, it’s not certain that Jesus never said anything about homosexuality. It’s possible He did address it but His statement wasn’t recorded. The Gospel writers didn’t document everything Jesus said and did—only what they thought was important to their audience. Indeed, most of what Jesus said (and did) was never written down. John 21:25 says, “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.” It’s possible Jesus did talk about homosexuality but the Gospel writers didn’t feel it was necessary to include it in their accounts.

To miss the mark

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows:when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:18-21 NASB)

In the passage above, the word “sins” translates the noun ἁμαρτιῶν, which is the Genitive, Plural of ἁμαρτία or hamartia, from the verb ἁμαρτάνω or hamartanō, which means, “to miss the mark.” The word group from which these two words belong gives the sense of missing the mark, losing, or falling short of a goal (particularly a spiritual one), as in Romans 3:23, “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” The noun form, ἁμαρτία, typically refers to the transgression of the law, for example, 1 John 3:4, “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.” Therefore, ἁμαρτία is used to denote our sin against God. Apart from the atoning blood of Jesus Christ, ἁμαρτία results in death, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord ” (Romans 6:23). “Psst…Lectio Divina…Your Mysticism is Showing”

From Berean Research:

The first time I heard the term lectio divina I thought it was from the Harry Potter books, probably a spell cast by Harry to render an enemy helpless. But, no, as it so happens it’s Latin for “sacred reading” and we’re urged to practice it as we read our Bible and pray.  Not surprisingly, lectio divina is brought to us by the Roman Catholic magical mystical monks.  In a nutshell, the idea is to “turn your mind from outward things to the deep parts of your being,” while reading the Bible.  Supposedly, “You are not there to learn to read, but…to experience the presence of your Lord!”  Catholic mysticism, anyone?

Pamela Couvrette of Guarding the Deposit explores lectio divina and tells us why this practice is both unbiblical and dangerous. She writes:

Bethel’s Medical Healing Conference to bring army; activate impartation

Berean Research has the story:

Bethel Healing Conference

A gathering of medical professionals who pray for their patients seems like a fantastic idea, in the right context. But there is more to Bethel Church’s upcoming Medical Healing Conference than meets the eye. The April event starring self-proclaimed “prophet” Bill Johnson invites medical professionals to experience Bethel and “marry the natural with the supernatural,” or the science of medicine with God.

You may be thinking, “Good! There’s nothing unbiblical about praying for patients or asking God to skillfully guide a surgeon’s hand.” And on this point I’d agree.

But this is no ordinary conference, and its goal, as you are about to see, is anything but biblical Christianity. I’d like to show you a glimpse behind the curtain.

You may be thinking, “Good! There’s nothing unbiblical.

If you know nothing about the dangerous unbiblical theology behind Bethel Church of Redding, Calif., and its lead pastor Bill Johnson, this report may surprise and concern you. I’ve included many links at the bottom of this article for you to begin to study and research why so many discerning Christians are warning and fleeing this movement. Please hold what you learn up to the light of truth in Scripture.

Scientific Journal Retracts Paper Referencing Human Hand’s “Design by Creator”

Christian News Network reports:

A scientific journal caved in to pressure from evolutionists and retracted an article about the human hand that mentions “the Creator” three times. On January 5, the journal “PLOS ONE” published a peer-reviewed article titled “Biomechanical Characteristics of Hand Coordination in Grasping Activities of Daily Living.” The article, which was written by a team of Chinese and American scientists, explores the complex design and coordinated movements of the human hand. “The human hand is an amazing instrument that can perform a multitude of functions,” the scientists wrote, later explaining that hand movements “are enabled by a highly complex structure, with 19 articulations, 31 muscles and more than 25 degrees of freedom.”

God’s Word abides only in genuine believers

38 You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. (John 5:38 NASB)

In John 5:30-47 the apostle gives us several witnesses to establish the truthfulness and genuiness of Jesus Christ and His ministry. Our Lord Jesus presented these witnesses who testified to His identity as the Son to those who opposed Him. The first witness given is John the Baptist in vv32-35. The second witness is our Lord’s own words in vv 35, 36. The third witness is the Father in vv 37, 38. The fourth witness is the Old Testament Scriptures in vv 39-47. However, as is the case from this point to the end of John, those who most vehemently opposed our Lord and His ministry, refused to believe. View article →

The source of our fullness in Christ

22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1:22-23 NASB)

(Ephesians 1:22-23 NA28)

What is “fullness?” In the passage above the NASB translates πλήρωμα as “fullness.” In this form it refers to “that which is filled.” It was used of a ship being filled with sailors, rowers, soldiers, and even cargo. The verb form, πληρουμένου, is found later in the same verse. The tense of the verb is a present participle, showing continuous action. What does this mean? Christ fills the church with His own life. Andy Did It Again

Todd Pruitt, contributor on Mortification of Spin podcast, addresses the brouhaha over Andy Stanley’s recent sermon criticizing small churches and subsequent Twitter apology.

Andy Stanley

By now many of you have seen the clip of Andy Stanley criticizing small churches and the people who choose to attend them. Specifically Pastor Stanley said:
“When I hear adults say, ‘I don’t like a big church. I like about 200. I wanna be able to know everybody.’ I say you are so stinkin’ selfish. You care nothing about the next generation. All you care about is you and your five friends. You don’t care about your kids, anybody else’s kids. If you don’t go to a church large enough, where you can have enough middle-schoolers and high-schoolers so they can have small groups and grow up the local church, you are a selfish adult. Get over it. Find yourself a big ol’ church where your kids can connect with a bunch of people, and grow up and love the local church. Instead, what you do…you drag your kids to a church they hate, and then they grow up and hate the local church, and then they go off to college, and you pray there’ll be a church in their college town that they connect with, and guess what: all those churches are big, the kind of church you don’t like. Don’t attend a church that teaches your children to hate church.”
No doubt seeing the quick and negative reaction across social media, Stanley took to Twitter to offer an apology.

The bill would align Colorado law on birth certificates with federal policies for those changing their gender on Social Security cards, U.S. passports and other documents. Nine states and the District of Columbia have similar laws.
