Language proves God’s existence, prof says

Baptist Press reports:

Evidence for the existence of God is, quite literally, on the tip of your tongue, says Southern Baptist professor Jeremy Lyon.

Lyon, associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, Ga., and John Baumgardner, a geophysicist who teaches at Southern California Seminary in El Cajon, Calif., argue the existence of language points to the existence of God.

Because language is not comprised merely of physical matter, it must have a source that is separate from the physical universe, Lyon and Baumgardner wrote in an article for the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society (JETS) titled “A Linguistic Argument for God’s Existence.” That source, they asserted, can only be God.

Our Lord’s High Priestly Prayer

1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, 2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. (John 17:1-2 NASB)

In John 17, we have the transition marking the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the beginning of His intercessory ministry for all believers (Hebrews 7:25). This has been called “The High Priestly Prayer,” however; it does summarize John’s entire Gospel. For instance, its principal themes include Jesus’ obedience to His Father, the glorification of His Father through His death and exaltation, the revelation of God in Jesus Christ, the choosing of the disciples out of the world, their unity modeled on the unity of the Father and the Son, and the believers final destiny in the presence of the Father and Son. There are three main sections to this prayer. In vv1-5, we have Jesus’ prayer for Himself. In vv 6-19, we have Jesus’ prayer for the apostles. In vv20-26 we have Jesus’ prayer for all New Testament believers who will form the Church. View article →

New York Mayor Signs Order to Allow Use of City Restrooms, Locker Rooms Based on “Gender Identity”

According to Christian News Network:

The Democratic mayor of New York City has signed an executive order that allows those of the opposite sex to use city-owned restroom facilities and locker rooms in accordance with their “gender identity.”

The order applies to parks, pool areas, playgrounds, recreation centers, office buildings and other city-owned facilities, and allows persons to use the desired restrooms without having to first show identification or any medical documentation.

“Today’s order makes it clear that New York City fully supports the right of every New Yorker to use the single-sex facility consistent with their gender identity,” Bill de Blasio said in a statement. “New York City is the birthplace of the fight for LGBT rights, and we continue to lead in that fight so every New Yorker can live with dignity.”

Jesus Didn’t Say Anything about Homosexuality

Greg Koukl and Alan Shlemon of Stand to Reason tackle what has become a highly contentious issue in the visible Church.  Since Jesus didn’t talk about homosexuality, as some people claim, that must mean it’s okay to be gay, right?  But what about Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13, Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, and 1 Timothy 1:9-11, where homosexual behavior is condemned?

HomosexualityIf you’ve ever claimed that Scripture says homosexual behavior is a sin, there’s a good chance someone tried to correct you with, “Jesus never said anything about homosexuality.” It doesn’t matter what Bible verse bolsters your claim, Jesus’ silence on the matter allegedly trumps all other considerations. Here are seven reasons why this objection doesn’t work.

First of all, Jesus didn’t need to say anything about homosexuality. No first century Jew questioned whether homosexual sex was morally permissible. That’s because every Old Testament reference, poem, or metaphor that addresses sex and marriage in a positive way presumes heterosexual relations. Furthermore, every reference to homosexuality in the Old Testament is negative. There was no debate as to what the biblical witness was on that behavior. God-fearing Jews already believed homosexual sex was prohibited.

Second, it’s not certain that Jesus never said anything about homosexuality. It’s possible He did address it but His statement wasn’t recorded. The Gospel writers didn’t document everything Jesus said and did—only what they thought was important to their audience. Indeed, most of what Jesus said (and did) was never written down. John 21:25 says, “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.” It’s possible Jesus did talk about homosexuality but the Gospel writers didn’t feel it was necessary to include it in their accounts.

To miss the mark

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows:when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:18-21 NASB)

In the passage above, the word “sins” translates the noun ἁμαρτιῶν, which is the Genitive, Plural of ἁμαρτία or hamartia, from the verb ἁμαρτάνω or hamartanō, which means, “to miss the mark.” The word group from which these two words belong gives the sense of missing the mark, losing, or falling short of a goal (particularly a spiritual one), as in Romans 3:23, “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” The noun form, ἁμαρτία, typically refers to the transgression of the law, for example, 1 John 3:4, “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.” Therefore, ἁμαρτία is used to denote our sin against God. Apart from the atoning blood of Jesus Christ, ἁμαρτία results in death, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord ” (Romans 6:23). “I have indeed seen His faithfulness,” she adds.

“Psst…Lectio Divina…Your Mysticism is Showing”

From Berean Research:

The first time I heard the term lectio divina I thought it was from the Harry Potter books, probably a spell cast by Harry to render an enemy helpless. But, no, as it so happens it’s Latin for “sacred reading” and we’re urged to practice it as we read our Bible and pray.  Not surprisingly, lectio divina is brought to us by the Roman Catholic magical mystical monks.  In a nutshell, the idea is to “turn your mind from outward things to the deep parts of your being,” while reading the Bible.  Supposedly, “You are not there to learn to read, but…to experience the presence of your Lord!”  Catholic mysticism, anyone?

Pamela Couvrette of Guarding the Deposit explores lectio divina and tells us why this practice is both unbiblical and dangerous. She writes:

Bethel’s Medical Healing Conference to bring army; activate impartation

Berean Research has the story:

Bethel Healing Conference

A gathering of medical professionals who pray for their patients seems like a fantastic idea, in the right context. But there is more to Bethel Church’s upcoming Medical Healing Conference than meets the eye. The April event starring self-proclaimed “prophet” Bill Johnson invites medical professionals to experience Bethel and “marry the natural with the supernatural,” or the science of medicine with God.

You may be thinking, “Good! There’s nothing unbiblical about praying for patients or asking God to skillfully guide a surgeon’s hand.” And on this point I’d agree.

But this is no ordinary conference, and its goal, as you are about to see, is anything but biblical Christianity. I’d like to show you a glimpse behind the curtain.

You may be thinking, “Good! There’s nothing unbiblical.

If you know nothing about the dangerous unbiblical theology behind Bethel Church of Redding, Calif., and its lead pastor Bill Johnson, this report may surprise and concern you. I’ve included many links at the bottom of this article for you to begin to study and research why so many discerning Christians are warning and fleeing this movement. Please hold what you learn up to the light of truth in Scripture.

Scientific Journal Retracts Paper Referencing Human Hand’s “Design by Creator”

Christian News Network reports:

A scientific journal caved in to pressure from evolutionists and retracted an article about the human hand that mentions “the Creator” three times. On January 5, the journal “PLOS ONE” published a peer-reviewed article titled “Biomechanical Characteristics of Hand Coordination in Grasping Activities of Daily Living.” The article, which was written by a team of Chinese and American scientists, explores the complex design and coordinated movements of the human hand. “The human hand is an amazing instrument that can perform a multitude of functions,” the scientists wrote, later explaining that hand movements “are enabled by a highly complex structure, with 19 articulations, 31 muscles and more than 25 degrees of freedom.”

God’s Word abides only in genuine believers

38 You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. (John 5:38 NASB)

In John 5:30-47 the apostle gives us several witnesses to establish the truthfulness and genuiness of Jesus Christ and His ministry. Our Lord Jesus presented these witnesses who testified to His identity as the Son to those who opposed Him. The first witness given is John the Baptist in vv32-35. The second witness is our Lord’s own words in vv 35, 36. The third witness is the Father in vv 37, 38. The fourth witness is the Old Testament Scriptures in vv 39-47. However, as is the case from this point to the end of John, those who most vehemently opposed our Lord and His ministry, refused to believe. View article →

The source of our fullness in Christ

22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1:22-23 NASB)

(Ephesians 1:22-23 NA28)

What is “fullness?” In the passage above the NASB translates πλήρωμα as “fullness.” In this form it refers to “that which is filled.” It was used of a ship being filled with sailors, rowers, soldiers, and even cargo. The verb form, πληρουμένου, is found later in the same verse. The tense of the verb is a present participle, showing continuous action. What does this mean? Christ fills the church with His own life. Andy Did It Again

Todd Pruitt, contributor on Mortification of Spin podcast, addresses the brouhaha over Andy Stanley’s recent sermon criticizing small churches and subsequent Twitter apology.

Andy Stanley

By now many of you have seen the clip of Andy Stanley criticizing small churches and the people who choose to attend them. Specifically Pastor Stanley said:
“When I hear adults say, ‘I don’t like a big church. I like about 200. I wanna be able to know everybody.’ I say you are so stinkin’ selfish. You care nothing about the next generation. All you care about is you and your five friends. You don’t care about your kids, anybody else’s kids. If you don’t go to a church large enough, where you can have enough middle-schoolers and high-schoolers so they can have small groups and grow up the local church, you are a selfish adult. Get over it. Find yourself a big ol’ church where your kids can connect with a bunch of people, and grow up and love the local church. Instead, what you do…you drag your kids to a church they hate, and then they grow up and hate the local church, and then they go off to college, and you pray there’ll be a church in their college town that they connect with, and guess what: all those churches are big, the kind of church you don’t like. Don’t attend a church that teaches your children to hate church.”
No doubt seeing the quick and negative reaction across social media, Stanley took to Twitter to offer an apology.

The bill would align Colorado law on birth certificates with federal policies for those changing their gender on Social Security cards, U.S. passports and other documents. Nine states and the District of Columbia have similar laws.

An Analysis of Celebrate Recovery Addictions Program

Eric Davis of The Cripplegate analyzes the popular packaged addiction program, Celebrate Recovery (CR) that many churches have adopted. The program, created by John Baker and Rick Warren, is supposedly based on biblical principles. In his review, Davis informs us that “CR is founded on eight principles taken from the Beatitudes and has similarities to the twelve steps of Alcoholic’s Anonymous.”

The question we must ask ourselves is, should Christians get involved in a program that stems from A.A.’s twelve steps?   Absolutely not says researcher John Lanagan. Lanagan has done a massive amount of research on A.A., and what his research has turned up is that A.A. co-founders Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith were deeply involved in the occult aka spiritualism. “Alcoholics Anonymous has served its purpose,” says Lanagan.  “That purpose has been to weaken the church, dilute the theology of Christians exposed to the 12 Step religion, and to point unbelievers away from Christ.” Discover the “spiritual” truth behind A.A. here.

So now to part 1 of Eric Davis’  2 part series…

Enslaving behaviors are as old, and common to humanity, as sin itself. Since our fall at the dawn of time, we have been naturally enslavement to every destructive behavior possible. In response, various efforts have been made to deal with the problem.

One such effort is a packaged addictions program called Celebrate Recovery (CR). John Baker and Rick Warren of Saddleback Church created the program in 1991 to help people with various addictions. Rick Warren writes, “[D]uring the ten-week series that I preached to kick off this program, our attendance grew by over 1500!” (John Baker, Celebrate Recovery Leader’s Guide, 12). During the past 25 years, some 20,000 churches in the United States have reportedly used CR, with some 2.5 million people having completed the program. Needless to say, CR has had a major influence on the church.

Kasich Backtracks “Cupcake” Remarks, Says Businesses Shouldn’t Have to Participate in “Gay Weddings”

Christian News Network reports:

Republican presidential candidate John Kasich seemed to backtrack on Thursday night on his assertion that some businesses are refusing to sell cupcakes to persons who identify as homosexual, stating during the Republican debate in Detroit that having to participate in an event is a “whole other issue.”

As previously reported, during an event last month at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia, the Ohio governor said that he doesn’t believe businesses have the same protections as churches, and that business owners should just “move on” in regard to homosexuality.

“I think frankly, our churches should not be forced to do anything that’s not consistent with them. But if you’re a cupcake maker and somebody wants a cupcake, make them a cupcake,” he stated. “Let’s not have a big lawsuit or argument over all this stuff. Move on. The next thing, you know, they might be saying if you’re divorced you shouldn’t get a cupcake.”

Anglican Church of Canada now unlikely to agree to same-sex marriage

According to Christian Today:

The Anglican Church of Canada is not now expected to change its law this summer to allow gay marriage, the bishops have admitted.

Canada’s bishops are unlikely to give the two-thirds majority needed to agree changes to the marriage canon at the Church’s General Synod in July.

The realisation that the change to marriage doctrine does not have enough support in the leadership has led to some bishops being “mortified and devastated”.

Saving faith’s reality is the risen Christ

18 The Jews then said to Him, “ What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “ Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It took forty- six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken. (John 2:18-22 NASB)

My wife and I just got home from the theater. After I got off work today we went to see the movie Risen.

I was quite surprised at how Biblically accurate it was. It is a look at our Lord’s crucifixion, resurrection and ascension from the eyes of an unbeliever, at least at the beginning. I don’t want to spoil it for you. After coming home I wanted to post something about our Lord’s resurrection so…

Without the resurrection of Christ, Christianity is just another religion based on ancient teachings of Men. It was the reality of Jesus’ bodily resurrection that God used in light of the teachings from Scripture to bring Jesus’ disciples into belief. His resurrection is what God uses in the Gospel to make it real in the hearts of those whom He effectually calls and regenerates. In other words saving faith’s reality is the risen Christ. California is considering a travel ban on states with [so-called] anti-gay laws

Miami Herald reports:

Like always, lawmakers jammed a mountain of bills into the legislative queue just ahead of the Feb. 19 deadline to introduce them.

Many of them affect state employees. Some would install new laws and regulations that pile on workload (it happens every year to DMV staff) or by altering some aspect of how state government itself conducts business.

Now, with the 30-day waiting period to start hearing those measures just ahead, here’s one to watch: Assembly Bill 1887 by Assemblyman Evan Low, a Democrat from Campbell.

Low wants to prohibit state employees from government-funded travel to states that have “a law in effect that sanctions or requires discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression,” according to his bill’s language.

U.S. Supreme Court Divided in Argument Over Law That Could Close Most Texas Abortion Facilities

Christian News Network reports:

The U.S. Supreme Court seemed divided on Wednesday as it heard oral argument over a Texas law that some say would result in the closure of the majority of abortion facilities in the state.

As previously reported, in 2013, following the passage of several safety regulations for abortion facilities, Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocacy groups filed a lawsuit against Texas officials, asserting that the new requirements would have an adverse affect on most facilities.

Anne Graham Lotz Lassoing Baptists With Wiccan Prayer Circles

Circle MakerBlogger Bud Alheim informs us that Anne continues to promote a “new way of praying” she discovered in The Circle Maker which is nothing more than an occult book (here). This time she taught praying in circles at a Baptist campus. A few months ago she posted the following on her blog: As I look ahead into 2016, I feel compelled to draw a circle around this city, this state, this nation” and pray! Until God answers. Do the same. Please. On this first day of the New Year, draw your own circle. Then pray for everything that’s inside of it.

Now to Alheim’s blog post:

Just last week, February 25, the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC hosted “An Evening With Anne” in which the daughter of the renowned evangelist was given free reign of the dais to promote the false teaching of circle making, contemplative prayer.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that SEBTS would host such an evening of Scripture-denying false teaching. You may recall in June 2015, when the President of SEBTS, Danny Akin, made news (HERE, and HERE, among others) for eagerly joining in with atheist Richard Dawkin’s website Openly Secular (Video: HERE) in order to, not defend a Christian worldview nor to share the Gospel, but to “pitch tolerance” for atheists, as the Christian Examiner noted.

If you’re the President of a Southern Baptist seminary, and you get invited to go on video on Richard Dawkins’ website, that’s stupendous! What an opportunity to share the Gospel!

But if you’re Danny Akin, president of a Southern Baptist seminary, it’s more important to seek unity, and tolerance, and get-alongedness with those whose very souls are heaping up God’s wrath. Let’s not share the Gospel; let’s find ways we can live together in harmony! (I’m here inserting a new hashtag … #PATHETIC-SOUTHERN-BAPTIST-LEADERSHIP-FAIL!)

The righteousness we must have to enter the Kingdom of Heaven

1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 3 For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. (Romans 10:1-4 NASB)

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16 NASB)

I am sure when our Lord told His disciples on the Mount of Olives that they were the light of the world that there were some who were getting the idea that the way of our Lord was some form of works righteousness that was at a higher, but better level than that of the Scribes and Pharisees who were all about legalism. Some today still have that idea. However, He followed that statement with the following:

17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-20 NASB)

So, what was our Lord teaching here? He wasn’t teaching us to follow legalism, that is, that our righteousness is somehow obtained by a strict adherence to the Law of Moses was He? Paul was very clear in the book of Galatians that no one ever obtained the righteousness of God that way. View article →

Phil Johnson: “‘Evangelical’ support for Trump proves the American Evangelical movement isn’t truly _evangelical_ in any historic sense of the word”

Because of all the discussion going on regarding whether or not Donald Trump is an evangelical Christian, as he claims, we’ve decided to share what some of our Christian leaders are saying about Mr. Trump. The following Facebook post was penned by executive director of Grace to you, Phil Johnson, who once said that the term “evangelical” is likely the most abused term in the entire religious lexicon.

Please allow me to expand on something I posted [on Facebook] in reply to some questions that came up in an earlier comment-thread. Here is my answer to friends who wonder if there’s a contradiction between my sounding an alarm during an election year regarding Donald Trump’s character vs. my own frequently-expressed opinion that churches and pastors should keep partisan politics at arm’s length, and Christians should not be deluded into thinking that the machinery of the American Electoral College can be commandeered for the advancement of Christ’s kingdom.

This isn’t about politics. My concerns about Donald Trump have nothing to do with his political convictions. Even if I agreed with every position he took on both foreign and domestic policy, it would still be my firm belief that he does not qualify to lead this or any other nation. It’s frightening to think that such an irascible and capricious man, severely lacking in both self-control and moral boundaries—a man whom we have repeatedly seen fight like a 7-year-old schoolgirl—might have the power to invoke war or take other executive actions.

Of course Trump is by no means the only Presidential candidate (including certain current office-holders) who is morally, spiritually, and ethically stunted. He’s surely the *worst,* but he’s neither the first nor the only scoundrel who doesn’t deserve anyone’s votes. American politicians for years have seemed to be trying to outdo each other to see who can be more arrogant, more narcissistic, more ostentatious, more wantonly driven by the flesh, and more cleverly deceitful—while being less accountable, less open to instruction or admonition, and above all, less modest. But Trump has greatly upped the ante, and he is certain to be the hands-down winner by an incredible margin in the contest to see who can be the mouthiest and most unsavory political candidate ever. I can’t imagine how anyone could ever surpass him for sheer carnal chutzpah. I’m especially annoyed by the ridiculous pretense (put forward and fostered by Trump himself) that he is a faithful Christian who “reads the Bible more than anyone else”—even though he claims he can’t remember ever asking God for forgiveness or even needing to. This man is not a Christian, and as long as he insists he is—and (evidently) manages to get lots of people to believe it,—my conscience is continually telling me I have a duty to warn my friends and members of my flock not to be duped by this swaggering loudmouth falsely masquerading as a messiah.

I’m appalled by the pathetic gullibility of hundreds of thousands who self-identify as “evangelicals” (presumably people who would say they believe the Bible is true) who nevertheless are quite willing to believe that this arrogant adulterer represents hope, or promise, or an improvement of some kind.

Americans already voted an overweening narcissist into office eight years ago. Why would anyone think an even more egomaniacal blowhard is going to make things better for our nation?

Yes, I know God is sovereign, and that the king’s heart is in His hands (Proverbs 21:1), and I DO rest in the knowledge that His truth will ultimately triumph, and He will use all things for our good and His glory.

But I’ve never viewed my Calvinist convictions as an excuse for indifference or inaction. I needed to say something.

Planned Parenthood dented as American Cancer Society backs away from breast exams

Washington Times has the report:

Planned Parenthood Threatened with cuts to its state and federal funding, Planned Parenthood has fought back by touting its non-abortion services, starting with its “life-saving breast cancer screenings.”

The problem? The American Cancer Society no longer recommends the annual procedures, saying in its latest directive that they have failed to show a “clear benefit.”

“Research does not show a clear benefit of physical breast exams done by either a health professional or by yourself for breast cancer screening,” the society said in an Oct. 20 statement after the directive was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“Due to this lack of evidence, regular clinical breast exam and breast self-exam are not recommended,” the statement said. “Still, all women should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and report any changes to a health care provider right away.”

For Planned Parenthood, the recommendation is another blow in its battle to portray itself as an indispensable health care provider while it tries to stem a rash of defunding efforts.

Your Choice: Homosexual Hegemony or Free Speech

Bill Muehlenberg of Culture Watch details how homosexual fascism is on the rise. LGBT activists aim to silence all dissenting voices and are attempting to destroy anyone who disagrees with their radical agenda. We’re in the midst of a moral revolution that is rapidly spreading across America and pressure to conform to the LGBT agenda is mounting. Muehlenberg reminds us that freedom of speech is at stake, especially for Bible believing Christians — and he has several examples of Christians who are being persecuted for clinging to the biblical view that homosexuality is a sin. (Rom 1:24-27, 1 Cor. 6:9) He writes:

SilencedIt’s becoming abundantly clear that we either insist on a whole raft of special rights for homosexuals, or we defend freedom of speech, but we cannot have both. Every day we find more appalling examples of homosexual militants and their allies in the State clamping down on freedom of speech.

Simply dare to take a contrary view to the reigning homosexual orthodoxy and all hell will break loose. That is why in my 2014 book Dangerous Relations I had an entire chapter on the erosion of freedom under the homosexual juggernaut. I offered 165 examples from a 34 month period of individuals being persecuted for holding differing beliefs.

Simply to state that marriage is between a man and a woman on your own private Facebook page for example can result in you being fined or fired. And some of the horror cases I cite show that differing viewpoints can even see you being jailed.
