While the most common accusation against those who are considered in the “discernment ministry” is that their expositions cause disunity amongst the brethren, the call from the Word of God is not unity at all costs, but unity within the Body of Christ in the Spirit in the bond of peace. The key to having unity among Christians is not that all claim to be Christians, but that the Holy Spirit bestows oneness within all true believers through which He creates a bond of peace that is godly love for one another. Before we get to her major concerns, I must remind you that in 2012 CRN reported that Lectio Divina, a sacred reading that was introduced to the West by John Cassian, one of the Roman Catholic “Desert Fathers,” early in the fifth century. Lectio Divina, a form of contemplative prayer, was practiced by over 40,000 people who gathered for the Passion 2012 conference led by John Piper, Beth Moore, Francis Chan and Passion founder Louie Giglio. These supposedly solid Christians took turns reading from the book of Ephesians [watch here]. Following each reading the entire stadium was asked to “be still” as all waited to “hear” from Jesus. So much for spiritual discernment.

Be Filled by the Spirit

What does it mean for a Christian to be “filled” by the Holy Spirit? In Ephesians 5:18 (above) the preposition “with” renders the Greek word ἐν (en), “in, with, by, among, at, on, when, to, as, for, through, while, within, of, about, into, because, during, throughout, before, under.”  As Louis Sperry Chafer said, “It is not a matter of acquiring more of the Spirit, but rather of the Spirit of God acquiring all of the individual.”1 The believer who is Spirit-filled is influenced by the Spirit and nothing else while those who are not, are more influenced by the temporal….
